Captain Ballard was aboard
the Enterprise in 1964 as the
first nuclear task force circum
navifat,ed the world.
His other assignments in
clude serving as Naval Tactical
Data Systems instructor at
NATTC in Glynco, until 1969;
assistant Combat Information
Center officer aboard the
Enterprise from 1969 to 1971,
deploying to the South China
Sea; }i‘actical Data Systems
coordinator at Damneck, Va.,
from - 1972 to 1974;
Maintenance and Operations
officer for VAW 121 from
1974-76, deploying to the
Mediterranean Sea; %xecutive
Officer and Commanding Of
ficer for VAW 113 at the
Miramar, Calif., deploying to
the Western Pacific andy Infiian
Ocean; serving as staff Combat
Information %enter officer of
Commander Carrier group Five
at Subic B?'. Philippines. Cap
tain Ballard operated from five
different flag ships from Subic
Bay, making extensive
deployments to the Indian
Ocean and North Arabian Sea.
The Menlo native was in
volved in planning at the multi
service and multi-national
level, including short-notice
Ereparation planning for the
ostage rescue attempt in Iran.
Captain Ballard was the
Navy's initial liaison officer in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,
establishing joint Navy-Air
Force operational procedures
in response to the Iranian-
Iraqui war.
From 1981 to 1983, he serv
ed on the staff of Tactical
Training Group Pacific.
Next, he was assigned to
the Joint Chiefs of Staff in
Washington as chief of the
Operations and Evaluation
Division, Command, Control
and Communications Systems
Directorate. He was responsi
ble for the analysis and evalua
tion of C-3 systems which inter
connect the National Com
mand Authority with the
military’s unified and specified
commands. It is this post Cap
tain Ballard is leaving to
assume his new duties in
California.
Captain Ballard's awards
include the Meritorious Service
Medal, the Navy Expedi
tionary Medal, the Armed
Forces Expeditionary Medal,
the Vietnam Service Medal, the
Navy Unit Commendation and
the Meritorious Unit
Commendation. |
He is married to the former
Merline Hickox, Brunswick,
and they have three children:

Breaks World’s ‘lce-Sitting’ Record
Charles Saylors, Summerville, broke the world’s record
for “‘ice-sitting” over the weekend at Brad Ragan Tire
Co. and won a 25-inch color television set in the process.
The previous record for “‘ice-sitting” was less than eight
hours. Saylors cooled more than his heels for 13 hours
37 minutes Saturday.

The Chattooga County
Sheriff's Office is investigating
the theft of a $399 video
cassette recorder from the
%Fartment of Sam and Cheryl
yatt, 1128 Cathie Lane,
Summerville.
Deguty Richard Gifford
said the couple reported that
someone had entered their
agartment last Friday through
the dining room window and
taken the recorder.
And Deputy Gifford said an
investigation is continuing in
to reports that Johnny Bowers,
1207 Pine St., Trion, received
a cut over his left eye while ly
ing in his daught,er’s swimmin,
pool last Friday. Officers saig
they couldn’t find anything at
the scene. Bowers said he felt
he had been hit by a ricochet
from a bullet or fireworks,
reports indicated.
The home of Mary K. Reil
ly, Cloudland, was reported
burglarized between June 28
and last Friday, said Deputy
Gifford. Entry was gained
through a rear door. Listed as
missing were four 8-track tapes
valued at S2O, a field jacfizt
valued at S4O and household
goods valued at S3O.
Dep. Greg Latta said so
meone threw rocks through
windows at T&D Shoes, Route
2, Box 88-A, Summerville, on
the night of July 3.
Someone apparently broke
into an unoccupied mobile
home owned by Lasker Broom,
Route 1, Box 228-A, Summer
ville, on the night of July 4,
said Deputy Latta. A partial
ly burned paper bag was found
in the mobile home, which also
had a strong odor of gasoline,
reports said. The home was not
damaged.
The sheriff's office said
Doug Suits, 63 Park Ave.,
Trion, reported that his billfold
was either lost or stolen at the
Summerville Wal-Mart Store
July 4. It contained $l6O cash,
credit cards and driver’s
license.
Vandals broke seven win
dows and a door window at the
Chattooga County Health
De(i)artment between July 3
and 5, said Deputy Gifford.
The department is located at
10 Farrar Dr., Summerville.
Someone took two 12-packs
of beer and a carton of cigaret
tes from the Food Mart gtore.

$33. Reports said they were
stolen when the clerk's back
was turned momentarily.
Someone knocked down 30
feet of chain link fence and four
posts at the residence of
Carlton Reynolds, Route 1,
Box 289, Summerville, said

involved a young black man
driving a small red car, said

A purse containing some

owned by Zennia Hester,
Route 2, Gaylesville, Ala.

ville, was reported stolen Mon
day night from Dempsey's
