The Chattooga County
Board of Education Tuesday
inspected progress on two ma
jor building projects in the
system.
The board visited the new
Summerville Middle School,
which is nearing completion,
and the Summerville lglemen
tary School, where a renova
tion and air conditioning pro
ject is under way.
The special meeting began
at 4:15 p.m. in Supt. Don
Hayes’ o&ice. Caroline Ellen
burg, Head Start, Northwest
Georgia Services, discussed the
possi%le renovation of the old
{')unior hiFh math and science
uilding for use by Head Start.
Board members cautioned that

but gave its permission for
Mrs. Ellenburg to have the
building inspected to deter
mine if renovation is possible.
Board members told Mrs.
Ellenburg that the Fire Mar
shall had condemned the junior
high buildings several years
ago. The state no longer
recognizes the campus as ap
propriate for use as a school,
according to the board.
Mrs. Ellenburg told the
board that a state grant might
be available to renovate the old
building for use by Head Start
if the project is feasible.
Board Chairman Joel Cook
said the state has not allowed
any of its funds to be used for
repair of the old junior high
campus for a number of years.
““When the school partially
burned over 10 years ago, it
was insurance money, not state
money that went into the
repair,”’ Cook said.
Board members told Mrs.
Ellenburg they would reach a
decision about donating the
building to the program at
their July 14 meeting.
