Aid Boosts Contras’ Morale
(Joe Morecraft, Marietta, candidate for the Seventh
District Congressional seat now held by Rep. George “‘Bud
dy" Darden, was in Summerville Tuesdax to discuss his
recent trip to Miami, Fla., and Central America and his
meeting with leaders o£ the Nicaraguan freedom fighters
(Contras). Morecraft, who has addressed the Summerville-
Trion Optimist Club and other groups in Chattooga Coun
ty during the months he has been a candidate, is pastor
of Chalcedon Presbyterian Church, Dunwood&'. He spoke
at memorial services for the late Seventh District Con
gressman Larry McDonald in September, 1983, and at each
memorial service since that time. He is running as a
Republican).
e
THE NEWS: You have just returned from a trip to Cen
tral America. What did you do and where did you NPO?
MORECRAFT: We spent a day and a half in Miami
with leaders of the freedom fighters in Nicaragua and then
spent two days in El Salvador with leading businessmen,
media personnel and politicians to find out what's going
there.
e i
THE NEWS: What was the reaction of the leaders of
the freedom fighters or contras to the SIOO-million in aid
recently approved by Congress?
MO%E&AFT: 'I?;:e leagers I met with were four of the
seven-member Directorate of the anti-communist resistance
in Nicaragua. called the Contras — courageous freedom
fighters. Of these four, one was Adolrho Calero . . . who's
the most fiopular military and political leader of the
freedom fifi ters in Nicaragua and who, when they win, will
likely be the new president of Nicaragua. All these peolfle
agree that the significance of the SIOO-million is not what
it can buy but what it'll do to the morale of the people. And
they’re convinced now with this public display of support
from the United States, they expect the other Central
American countries to give them their support and expect,
within a year after the money is received, to have a massive
national rebellion against the Sandinista government,
which will include the defection of up to 50 Eercent of the
Sandinista army and the overthrow of the Sandinista
government . . . That's what they're expecting and that's
what I pray really hap?ens.
N
THE NEWS: What kind of shape militarily are the
freedom fighters in now in Nicaragua, especially those
fighting out of Honduras?
MO%ECRAFT: They're an amazing crowd because I've
read articles by conservative and liberal think tanks that
have had the highest praise toward the activities and suc
cess of the contras in light of the fact they're facing a
massive army that has had unbelievable financial, military
and advisory support from the Soviet Union. So consider
ing what they're facing, both liberals and conservatives say
they’'re doing a very good job. They're very well organiz
ed. A man from my church, along with two or three other
former Cuban freedom fighters, from back in the Bay of
Pigs days, went to Nicaragua through the jungles to meet
with the Contras to audit some of the material that had
been sent from private sources from the United States and
it was all getting to where it was supposed to be getting.
So all this disinformation that the Sandinistas are
spreading in this country about the corruption of the Con
tras, the terroristic activities, the siphoning off of money
by the Contras, is just Fure disinformation. It's not fact
at all. They're very well organized; they're committed to
freedom. T{at was the thing that impressed me about them
all — these people have a fire in tgxeir bones. They love
freedom. They're willin*g to :iie for it.
*
THE NEWS: Who paid for your trip and organized it?
MORECRAFT: The trip was paid for by Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Hebrock, who made in-kind contributions to our cam
paign. Bill is our financial consultant. The man who arrang
ed the visit with these leadin% Salvadorans is Enrique
Altimerano, who is the editor of the largest newspaper in
Central America, out of San Salvador. It's very anti
communistic. And as a result, he has to edit the paper by
computer out of Miami and the threats are becoming so
serious he’s having to move to Spain but he’ll still edit the
paper by computer froin Spfin o
THE NEWS: Did you get to go into or fly over any of
the areas where the communist guerrillas are involved in
El Salvador?
MORECRAFT: We flew in a single-engine plane that
could have been taken out by machinegun gi'e — flew over
the most intensely active area of guerrilla activity in El
Salvador. It’s confined to the mountains. In San Salvador,
the capital, people don't even think about the guerrillas.
People there have never even seen a guerrilla. It’s confin
ed to the mountains — you could see power lines where
theg'd been blown up, you could see the damage done to
bridges; it was a terrigle thing to see what the Marxist guer
rillas were doinfi. The people in El Salvador, by the way,
are thrilled with the money that has been given to the
Nicaraguan freedom fighters because since tfile errillas
in El Salvador are equifiped and ma.intainegu by the
Nicare:iguan Sandinistas, they expect them not to be able
to send so much support now that the war is going to in
tensify in Nicaragua. . .
THE NEWS: Did Congress include anything to shoot
down the Hind helicopters the Soviet are supplying the
Sandinistas?
MORECRAFT: I asked them that question, what they
needed the most. And they said ground to air missiles to
shoot down the Hind helicopters. %rnfortunately. the heavy
weaponry cannot be purchased until the third installment
in February, which I cim’t tindersta.nd S
*
THE NEWS: Did you get to go anywhere near the El
Salvadoran-Nicaraguan border?
MORECRAFT: Yes. The guerrilla activity was closer
to Nicaragua than it was to San Salvador. By the way,
when I was in San Salvador, I met with media people, politi
cians, businessmen, to find out the real state of things in
El Salvador. Whereas they were concerned about the guer
rillas, they were convinced that the army had that situa
tion in hand. But they all agreed the biggest threat to the
security of El Salvador is the president, President
Duarte . .. Everyone from taxi-cab drivers to politicians
agreed on this . . . Duarte is a socialist and his socialistic
policies are destroying the country, particularly his ‘land
reform’ and ‘export reform.’ He's taken over agriculture
SAYS SHERIFF
Position Aided Chattooga
His year as president of the
Georgia Sheritxf"s Association
was rewarding and beneficial
to Chattooga County, accor
ding to Sheriff Gary McCon
nell, who recently returned
from the organization’s annual
meeting in Albany. :
*“lt was a good experience
for me personally and a lot of
service to Chattooga County,”
the sheriff said. ‘lt allowed me
to meet a lot of people and tell
them something positive about
Chattooga County. It allowed
me to visit alot oty law enforce
ment aiencies and pick up
ideas to help Chattooga Coun
ty. It was a privilege ?or me to
be allowed to serve as presi
dent of Georfiia’s sheriftg."
McConnell went out of of
fice at the convention after ser
vin% one year as president.
he sheriff said legislation
approved by the Georgia
General Assembly earlier tiis
year that affects sheriffs was
SAYS JOE MORECRAFT
discussed at the convention.
He praised Gov. Joe Frank
Harris' package which
strengthens the power of the
governor to remove from office
sheriffs who have been indicted
on criminal charges.
Prior to the change, McCon
nell said, a sheriff could remain
in office after being convicted
of a crime until his appeals pro
ces was exhausted, which could
sometimes take years. The new
legislation provides that a
sheriff convicted of a crime is
automatically suspended while
his appeals are being ?ursued.
“It gets them out of the of
fice,” the sheriff said.
Georgia is one of two states
in the country that have man
datory training for sheriff’s,
McConnell said. Under new
legislation, if a sheriff does not
meet training requirements,
the sheriff's association will
notify the governor, who may
suspend the sheriff 90 days
and collectivized the farms, he's confiscated the farms from
private owners and never paid them, he's taken over bank
ing, he's taken over the exporting industry and as a result,

other Central American countries i 3 now experiencing star
vation and is importing food. Unemployment has increas
ed from somewhere around 10 percent to around 65
percent . . .

THE NEWS: Gettlnirto another sulg)ect. how is your
camfid n looking now throughout the Seventh District?
ORECRAF*: It looks g;reat. We're far ahead of the
point we exfiect.ed to be at this particular point in time. I
remember this time a year ago we were worried about how
many peoxle or who we'd have to face in the Remelican
firimar{. nd because we started out earlX and worked
ard, the momentum has kept up and we don't face any
opposition in the l;l)‘nma.z' There've been several polls taken
tgat show the vulnerability of ‘‘Buddy’” Darden, the incum
bent. In fact, one poll that we took where we asked the
voters if they'd vote for ‘‘Buddy” Darden no matter who
ran against lv\im. and only 27 percent said they would. A
poll tfiat was taken by a Democrat just a few weeks ago
showed ‘“‘Buddy’ Darden’s nefatives to have increased
dramatically since that particular ‘goint. So we're excited
about the direction we're taking. We're excited about the
:{vge of financial support we're receiving. As with any can
idate, we wish more money would come in, but we're
receiving money from all over, as well as support and
volunteer activity from all over the district. Just a week
ago I got a personal letter and a check for SI,OOO from Jack
Kemg ... I was given a personal letter along with a check
for $2,000 from Vice President Geor%: Bush's committee.
So we are getting all sorts of support from Republicans and
conservative Democrat‘s. £ =
THE NEWS: Is there really a ‘‘Larry McDonald
brifide" fzghtingrthe Sandinstas in Nicaragua?
ORECRAFT: The fieople here in Chattooga Coun]tgy
may be interested in knowing that everybody in El
Salvador and Nicaragua knew and loved Larry McDonald,
who was also my friend. The freedom fighters are divided
up into brigades and one brigade which is 500-men strong,
is called the ‘‘Larry McDonald Task Force.” During my
trip I received an arm ‘patcl: of t‘l'lat brigade.
THE NEWS: Why should people in Chattooga County
vote for you over the incumbent?
MORI{‘CRAFT: First of all, I believe the way that the
overwhelming majority of people in Chattooaia County
believe, and that is traditional Christian morality. There
are some things that are right and there are some things
that are wrong. And that tie Constitution of the United
States is the real law of the land. I believe in limited govern
ment and I believe in getting the government off our backs
and out of our pocketbooks so that we can live out our lives
in freedom andp not worry about what the government’s go
ing to do to us next. Another reason people of Chattooga
County should vote for me, to put it practically and blunt
ly, I'll save them money. The incumbent is a part of the
big spending crowd in \{’ashington, D.C., and I'm a con
servative person. ..
* * *
THE NEWS: What is your view on gun control?
MORECRAFT: I don’'t believe in gun control...l
believe that it's the citizens; rigllt. to own firearms.
*
THE NEWS: What is your view of abortion?
MORECRAFT: I believe that abortion is the killing of
innocent human life. I believe human life begins at concep
tion and therefore it is the proper Constitutional duty of
the U. S. government to protect the ri%lts of life, liberty
and property of all its citizens. The Declaration of In
dependence says all l?eople are created equal . . . the Con
stitution and the Declaration recognize that we were
created by God, and from the moment we were conceived
in our mother’s womb, we had the right to life which must
be protected by the federal government. So I would work
as the Congressman of the people of Chattooga County to
defund and outlaw ab(lrtion; :
THE NEWS: What is your view of defense spending?
MORECRAFT: I believe that the primary purpose of
the government is to fprotect; its citizens and that's whgl
I am enthusiastically for President Reagan's peace shield,
called the Strategic Defense Initiative, or what the critics
call ““‘Star Wars.” It is a non-nuclear, space-based defense
program that would protect us and our allies aFainst
missiles launched against us from anywhere on the face of
the earth and woulg make nuclear war obsolete. I'm for a
strong defense.
* * *
THE NEWS: What in the incumbent’s record do you
find objectionable?
MORECRAFT: Knowing the people in Chattooga Coun
ty, number one is issues having to do with the spending
of our money. The incumbent votes for appropriations bills,
for sl;:ending bills that cost the citizens of Chattooga Coun
ty thousands and thousands of dollars. Second, when it
comes to dealing with our allies, sometimes his stand with
our allies, for example, South Africa, is weak. Also, up un
til I announced, he voted consistently pro-abortion. gince
I announced, he’s voted pro-life more than not. In fact, it's
interesting how conservative he's become since I announced
I was running for Congress.
