FANS. AIR CONDITIONERS
Local Cooling Sales ‘Hot’
The current droufiht and
late-arriving hot weather have
created all sorts of problems
for the area’s farmers, gardners
and at least one municipality,
as well as for the elderlp.
But it has spurred t{;e de
mand for fans and air
conditioning systems, and for
service to existing central
units, according to a survey by
The News. S
“We've sold out of fans and
ceiling fans, and sales of air
conditioners are doing very
well,”’ said Larry Stansell of
Stansell’'s S&S Furniture,
Trion. He still has plenty of air
conditioners but tfie sizes are
more limited now than at the
beginning of the season,
Stansell added. While 18,000
and 20,000 BTU models are
available, the mid-size 12,000
to 14,000 BTU models have
almost sold out, he indicated.
“It’s been busy, "’ said Cara
Wallace of Wallace Heating,
Air-Conditioning and
Refrigeration, Trion. At the
time of the survey, her father
had gone to Rome to obtain
more air conditioner parts and
her mother was cleaning vents
at a school unit. Whife they
have installed a few central
systems, Ms. Wallace said,
“We've mostly installed freon,
refilled systems with freon.”
FANS GONE
“We've been selling more
air conditioners than we can
get in,”" said Linda Landers of
Brad Ragan Tire and Ap
pliance, Highway 27, Summer
ville. One unit was left in the
store early this week and all the
fans had been sold, she
indicated.
“We've been doing real well
on air conditioners,” said Lewis
States.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Mayo,
Marvin and Durham and their
guest, Mrs. Mayo's mother of
South Carolina, were shopping
in Rome Monday afternoon.
H.L. Garner of Centre,
Ala., visited Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Strawn Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Strawn
enjoyed their Fourth of July
vacation in Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Stall
ings Jr. of Pennville were
guests of Mr. Stallings’
mother, Mrs. Laura Stallings,
Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Florence Strawn of
LaFayette was weekend guest
of her sister, Mrs. LaVenia
Strawn, in the Holland
community.
the Sunday morning worship service.
Everyone is invited to attend by the
pastor, the Rev. Herman Timms.
Van Pelt of Jordan Gas Co.,
Highway 27 north of Summer
vilfie. Most of the sales have
been in the last week and one
half of two weeks, he said.
While the firm doesn't sell
fans, it does have a plentiful
supply of air conditioners in
stock.
“We're about sold out of
fans,” said Lisa Wilson of the
Western Auto Associate Store,
101 W. Washin%‘ton Street,
Summerville. As for air condi
tioners? ‘‘We've got plenty —
we ordered 50 for the year,”
she added.
It’s been ‘‘hectic”” at Hamp
ton Refri%eration. 201 Ham
mond Circle, said Paula Hamp
ton. Quite a few central heating
and air conditioning units have
been installed in recent weeks,
said Ms. Hampton, and the ser
vice requests have been so
numerous, ‘‘He's had to turn a
lot of people down he just
couldn’t get to.”
Sears, Summerville Square,
doesn’t stock fans but the store
does have air conditioners and
has sold a lot, said Ann Willis.
But, the store is low on the
units due to the heat wave, she
indicated.
“They'd (air conditioners)
be good if I had any to sell
anymore,”’ said Theresa Latta
of Your Way Rentals and
#nles. 1 ‘lrien 'Road:
Summerville.
Wal-Mart Discount Store,
Summerville, didn’t stock any
air conditioning units this year,
said Al Swann, manager, but
the store is in good shape in
sofar as its stock of fans is
concerned.
“VERY BUSY"”
“Busy, very busy,’ was
how Donna Lathem of Bill's
Heating and Cooling, 1
Economy Street, Summerville,
described the business in re
