south of Marvin Street last
Wednesday afternoon, July 9,
according to Summerville
police.
Four people were hurt in
the wreck, two of them
children.
Summerville Officer Larry
Bennett identified the injured
as Phyllis Ann Brown, 21,
James Richard Brown, Ashley
Faye Brown, three, and James
R. Brown, 11 months, all of
LaFayette. They were carried
to Chattooga County Hosrital
after the mishap and later
transferred to Floyd Medical
Center, Rome,
Reports said a car driven by
Phyllis Brown was involved in
a collision with a dump truck,
being driven b¥‘ Samuel Scott
Mason, 31, LaFayette, and a
van driven by Lonnie Wayne
Gravitt, 35, Rising Fawn.
Mason was charged with fail
ing to yield the right of way.
Summerville Police Chief
Arlen Thomas said the two
children would have likely been
more seriously injured, or
erhaps killed, had they not
geén strapped in child safety
seats in the rear seat of the car.
Walkathon
Chairmen
Appointed
Judy Dooley and Marsha
Farrar have been appointed
special events chairmen for
Lyerly and Summerville,
respectively, as part of the fall
campai%n for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation. They will
be chairing a walk-a-thon this
year to raise funds for research
to find a cure for cystic fibrosis,
this nation's leadir:ig genetic
cause of childrens’ deaths.
A child inherits cystic
fibrosis throuih a recessive
gene from both parents who
are almost always unaware
that they carry the cystic
fibrosis gene until their child is
diagnosed as having the fatal
disease.
Cystic fibrosis ?roduces ab
normal amounts of thick-gluey
mucus that block breathing
and digestion. Daily therapy
and medication are necessarg:
to prolong the lives of C
victims.
Todai') children born with
cystic fibrosis even with the
best care have only aSO per
cent chance of living into tgeir
early twenties. The money rais
ed in Summerville and Lyerl
will support the researcfi
necessary for improvements in
diagnosis and treatment and
ultimately a cure so that
children born with CF can live
a normal life without fear of the
future.
Monfii raised through walk
a-thons like the one Ms. Dooley
and Ms. Farrar are planning
have funded research that {ust
last fall brought a startling
new breakthrough in the
search for the cystic fibrosis
gene that causes the disease.
A team of scientists using
a relatively new t.echniaue of
gene tracers narrowed the
search to less than 1 percent of
the DNA, the substance in the
body that carries all genes.
Now scientists can concentrate
on this small section which will
cut years off research time.
Some scientists believe that
the cystic fibrosis gene will be
identified within five years
with this narrowing of the area
to be probed.
