Rape Incident Still
Under Investigation
No arrests have been made
by Rome police in the June 15
rape of an 18-year-old Chat

ed several leads and brought
two suspects to the city jail for
questioning but they were
released without being charg
ed, Smith said.
Police think the rape of the
Chattooga County teen is con
nected with a rape two weeks
earlier in East Rome.

police said. Afterwards, the
man took a small amount of
money from the teen's purse
and sped away on the bicycle.

Fire Damages Downtown Apartment
Fire caused moderate damage to a
downtown Summerville apartment last
Thursday. The Summervill% Fire Depart
ment answered an alarm to the blaze at
11:43 a.m. and returned to the station at
12:09 p.m. The apartment, occupied by
Randy Shropshire Jr., is located on
Georgia Avenue at South Commerce

Two Being Sought
In Area Robbery
Summerville police are look
ing for two blacf( men in con
nection with the strong arm
robbery of a Summerville resi
dent last Friday night.
Officer Allen Bryant said
Chris Blackmon, Route 3,
Lyerly Highway, Summerville,
said he was knocked down and
his wallet taken during the
incident.
Blackmon said he was driv
ing north on Commerce Street
when the muffler came off his
car at the railroad tracks.
When he got out to check the
damage, reports said, two
black men attacked him and
took his wallet. They then fled
north on U.S. Highway 27,
Bryant said Blackmon
reported.
The wallet contained
driver's license, social security
card but no money, Blackmon
said, according to police.
Meanwhile, a new red
22-inch lawnmower valued at
$149 was stolen from the porch
of Hoyt McWhorter, 225 Scog
gins St., Summerville, said Of
ficer Bryant. The theft took
place last Friday, reports
indicated.
Vandals also sprayed
several words in black paint on
the northwest corner of the
Summerville Recreation Center
last Saturday night, said Of
ficer Monroe Mathis. Beer cans
also were tossed in the swimm
ing pool, he said.
Wildlife Meet
The Chattooga County
Wildlife Association will meet
at 7 r.m. today at its range at
Menlo to make final plans for
the Fiddler's Convention to be
held Aug. 9.

plans for a day of free dental
care for residents who have no
means of pa*ment.
Next uesday, Dr.
Johnson's office wilr be oren
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free
service to those wfio cannot af
ford dental care. Service such
as denture repair, exams,
prescriptions, fifiings. extrac
tions and cleaning will be
offered.
“*We've been in the county
five )l')ears and the community
has been very good to us,”
Johnson said. “\%’e wanted to
give something back to the
county.”
“We will help those who
cannot afford dental care and
have no welfare program or
dental insurance plan,"
Johnson said. ““There may be
peo£le who have jobs, yet are
unable to make ends meet.
These people are certainly
deservin%l of services and we
want to help them."
