Escape Heat Death
By TOMMY TOLES
Editor
While this summer’s heat
wave has killed thousands of
broiler chickens in the Nor
theast Georgia area, two Chat
tooga County poultry pro
ducers have so far escaged
ravages of the ot
temperatures.
Jack Thomas, Welcome Hill
Road, Trion, has 54,000 four
and one-half week-old broilers
in his houses at the present
time. The fact that the
chickens are young is a factor
in their surviving the hot
weather, Thomas said, because
the older they get, the more
susceptible to hot
temperatures they become.
In addition, Thomas said
his modern houses contain
large fans to ventilate heat out
side, a water fogging system
that uses the principle of
evaporative cooling and shades

on the sides. S
If it were to get hotter than
100 degrees for several days
after his chickens reach six
weeks of age, Thomas said, he
could have problems.
“So far, we aren’t having
any problems,” he said.
NEIGHBOR
A neighbor, Wayne Parker,
Welcome Hill Road, has 32,000
broilers in two houses. His
four-week-old birds are also at
an age where they are less sub
ject to heat stress than older
hens, said Parker. However, he
said he has noticed some stress
already, and if the heat con
tinued for a couple of weeks in
a row, he could have problems.
Chickens can stand heat for
several days if it cools off,
Parker said, but older hens
can't stand extended periods of
hot weather, especially after
they begin “topping out” at six
or seven weeks of age.
Like Thomas, Parker has
large ventilating fans in his
houses, as well as a misting,
evaporative cooling system. ‘
However, it is ineffective in |
geriods of high humidity, |
arker said. |
He remembers 1980 when |
he picked up as many as 2,300 |
dead chickens in a day because |
of high heat and hopes for |
some relief from any extended |
period of hot weather. i
With thunderstorms raking
the county and providing some
relief from the tfi'ought, as well
as hot weather, Parker has
another fear — a power outage |
that would cut off his fans. |
1 would be a
catastrophe,” he said.

Powell Seeks
New Road Bids
By TOMMY TOLES
Editor
Chattooga County Commis
sioner Harry Powell is readver
tising for bids for 5.35 miles of
paving for the State Line Road
and five miles of resurfacing
for roads in the county.
The action comes after
Powell received bids on Mon
day, July 7, on the projects but
decided not to open the two
pro&osals submitted, one by
A. W, Headrick Construction
Co., Summerville, and the
other by Watts Paving and
Construction Co., Gadsden,
Ala.
In the new advertisement,
which beqins today in The
Summerville News, the com
missioner said he will receive
bids on the projects until 10
a.m. Thursday, July 24.
The new bid ad is similar to
the previous ad but specifies
that the State Line Road pro
ject will be triple surface treat
ment in accordance with state
Department of Transportation
(DB’l‘) specifications. It says
stone for the prOf'ect would [‘;e
stockpiled at Cloudland and
stone for the various county
roads would be at the county
work camp. The ad also says
the project will be under super
vision of the DOT.
““We will consider prepara
tion of base for both projects,”
the ad says. ’
As for the bids submitted
by Headrick and Watts, Com
missioner Powell said both will
remain sealed and opened on
July 24. And he said a firm in
Adairsville may also submit a
proposal.
“We just had one bid,”
Powell said in referring to why
bids were not opened on July
7, “‘and the state won't accept
one bid.”” The Watts and
Headrick bids were pointed out
and Powell said, “g‘here was,
but one of them was for
materials. See, I went down
there and talked to Mr. Watts
himself. And one of them was
for materials only and applying
it, and the other one was for
preparation only and that's
Headrick’s. So see, they were
two different bids. ..
Headrick’s was only for
preparation.”
Continuing, Commissioner
Powell said, ‘‘So you see, the
state will not accept a single

bid. And that's all we had
because one of them was
materials, so Headrick stated.
Now I haven't seen Headrick's
bid but he told me that he
wasn't bidding on the material
because he doesn't put down
that type material. And the
other man doesn’t fix bases,
Mr. Watts, and he did give me
a bid on both. You see, Tdidn't
talk to the young Watts this
time, last week when I was
there. 1 talked to the older
gentleman, which I had never
met before and he save me a
bid, but not a lefi bid, the
younger one did. He dgave me
an oglen bid — just told me how
much it would be. Well, I
couldn't accept that; you've
got to have a sealed bid with
the words, ‘sealed’ written
across the envelope.”
The state DO’Fhas not yet
approved state funding for the
State Line Road dpavmg. the
commissioner said.
Last week, Commissioner
Powell said he had not opened
the bids July 7 because he
needed to get the state's
specifications for the pro{lect to
&sovide to Watts. But Charles
atts said he already had
state specifications for
Georgia. He said his bid was
for surface treatment onlq‘.
Ron Hess of the DOT in
Rome said last week that the
State Line Road project likel
would cost $55.0(§) to $60.00({
Felton Rutledge, DOT district
engineer, Cartersville, said last
week the DOT is reviewing the
preliminary cost estimates but
that the project had not been
given final approval by the
state.
Rutledge also said whether
Commissioner Powell opened
bids July 7 was of no concern
to the state because the state
will contract with the county
for the work and not the
rivate comfiany which actual-
Fy may do the work. The DOT
is concerned only with whether
the final product meets its
specifications, Rutledge
indicated.
