Hogue Lawsuit
Ends At Rome
A settlement has been
reached in U. S. District Court
at Rome between the City of
Summerville, several
golicemen and a woman who
ad filed a $12.5-million
lawsuit against them.
Lorrie Hogue, a resident of
Summerville Gardens Apart
ments, filed the lawsuit July
25, 1985 against the city,
Police Chief Arlen Thomas and
officers Monroe Mathis, Gene
Nix and James Pierce.
She claimed that the of
ficers failed to protect her when
she was attacked by her
“Getting the use of a new
car seat for only $lO a year is
a real bargain,” Mrs. Ham
mond said. “These car seats
cost from $45 to SSO in stores.”
At present, nine of the pro-
Fram's 15 car seats have been
oaned, but a similar grogram,

ounty Health Def)artment.
has 22 seats available. To con

estranged husband on April 21,
1984. Her attorney at the time
was Chris Frazier, Rome, who
has since left that city for
South Georgia. J. Anderson
Davis, Rome, reé)lresent the ci
ty and the officers in the
lawsuit.
According to court records,
the parties ‘‘reached an agree
ment as to settlement . . . and
have agreed that the . . . action
be dismissed with prejudice
and that no bill of cost will be
filed b&f either party.” Since it
was dismissed ‘‘with pre
judice,” it means it cannot be
refiled by Ms. Hogue.
City officials said the settle
ment involved the city’s in
surance company, Cheroiee In
surance Co., Nashville, Tenn.,
paying Ms. Hogue $27,000.
The agreement, filed in
federal court June 17 of this
year, was signed by Davis, Ms.
Hogue and Frazier.

Council
Meets
®
Tonight
t/lef(f)reliminary work is com
pleted in time, the Trion Mayor
and City Council may consider
the 1986-87 budget at its 7 p.m.
J ulglmeeting today, accorging
to Mayor J. C. Woods.
The mayor said he was still
working on the measure earlier
this week and it .may, or may
not, be ready for consideration
by the Council tonight.
Financial reports will be
considered by the Council and
other mostly routine business
is expected to be transacted, he
said.
Water conservation was not
on the agenda and likely won't
be discussed ‘‘unless someone
brings it up,” he said. Trion,
unlike Summerville, LaFayette
and other cities, has not receiv
ed a letter from the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources asking it to adopt a
water conservation plan by Ju
ly 31, he indicated. Mayor
Woods said he has obtained a
copy of the DNR letter sent to
LaFayette, however.
The outdoor watering ban
was relaxed a bit Monday with
Riegel Textile Corp., from
which Trion obtains its water,
saying people could water their
gardens — but not their lawns.
Mrs. Cash
Back Home
Summerville Mayor Sewell
Cash’'s wife is home after
undergoin%l tests at a Rome
hospital following a sudden il-
Iness suffered during the Old
Timers game July 12.
Mayor Cash said basic tests
revealed that his wife did not
suffer a heart attack, as was
first thought. She had a severe
gastrointestinal disorder, com
ined with an upper
respiratory problem, he
indicated.
She has been dismissed
from the hospital and is now
back home, he said.
