WATER CONSERVATION
IMPORTANT
IN THE HOME
Whether for bathing, cook
ing, laundering, or drinking,
each U.S. citizen uses an
average of 60 gallons of water
per day. This is triple the
amount people used at the turn
of the century —.a rate we.can
no longer afford. Fortunately,
there are many easy wa(x{vs to
conserve water around the
home.
At five to seven gallons per
flush, the toilet accounts for 45
percent of all water used inside
the home. You can adjust the
float level in the toilet’s water
tank to reduce the amount of
water needed per flush. In ad
dition, a plastic quart bottle
filled with water and placed in
the tank will save a quart of
water per flush. Don't use a
brick — it could harm the
plumbing. After flushing the
toilet, make sure it's water
closed valve closes all the way
before leaving the bathroom.
To find out if the toilet is leak
ing, place a bit of food colorinf
in the tank at night. If the col
oring seeps into the bowl by
the next day, it's time for
repairs.
Bathing accounts for
another 30 percent of indoor
water use. Bathing in a full tub
consumes 36 gallons of water,
while showering averages 25
gallons. You can save water by
bathing in a less-than-full tub,
or by taking shorter showers.
It also helps to put an inexpen
sive flow restrictor into the
shower head. Turning off the
shower while you lather can
save five to 10 gallons of water

Trena is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William g Noles,
Summerville. Steven’s parents
are Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E.
Hatfield, Trion.
After a honeymoon trip to
South Georgia, the couple is at
home on Plum Street, Trion.
per shower.
If each member of the fami
ly remembers to turn off the
water while brushing his teeth,
an additional five to 10 gallons
of water can be saved per day.
Also, instead of running the
water while shaving, fill the
sink, and teach the c%xildren to
turn off the faucets t'?htly.
Replace defective faucet
washers to eliminate all drips.
One drop per second from a
leaking faucet adds up to about
200 gallons a month.
Dishwashing and clothes
washing account for 20 percent
of indoor water use. An
automatic dishwasher uses 12
to 17 gallons each cycle,
although some new energy
saving models are on the
market that are designed to
use less hot water. Water can
be saved by running only full
loads. When hand-washing
dishes, wash and rinse in con
tainers of water rather than
under a running faucet.
