The News
The Summerville News this
week is pleased to announce
the addition of a new editorial
page columnist and a new
editorial cartoonist.
The cartoonist is Steve
Benson, cartoonist for the
Arizona Refiublic. He succeeds
Don Wright of the Miami
News, although The News will
still feature an occasional
Wright cartoon.
Benson has been an
editorial cartoonist since 1980.
He has been syndicated with
Tribune Media Services since
1984. Before then, he was with
the Washinfion Post Writers
Group for three years.
Benson received the Na
tional Headliner Award in
1984. He also received the
Arizona Press Club Award in
1980, 1981, 1984 and 1985.
Benson graduated cum laude
from Brigham Young Univer
sity in 1979 with a political
science degree. He is also a
graduate of Minneapolis’ Art
Instruction School.
Benson is married and has
four children.
The columnist is Gary
Solomon, a native of New Mex
ico who now resides in Car
rollton. He has had experience
in advertising and social work
but after having success as a
arttime author, he has recent
{)y made writing hizlprofession.
Humor is his specialty. He suc
ceeds Jimmy Townsend.
Solomon's wife, Marsha, is
a psychologist at a center for
emotionally disturbed children.
Solomon is a columnist for
several Georgia newspapers.

No Injuries
After

Mishap
No one was injured in a col
lision between a Chattooga
County Sheriff's Office patrol
car and another vehicle last
Sunday, according to the
Georgia State Patrol.
Drivers of the vehicles were
identified as Dep. Barry Ellis
Pless, 24, Star Route,
Cloudland, and James Larry
Hatcher, 19, Gaylesville, Ala.
Trooper Charles Toles said
both vefiicles were traveling
north on U. S. 27 just north of
Summerville when the accident
occurred around 2:08 a.m.
Sunday.
Deputy Pless was en route
toa cafl and attemfited.to pass
the Hatcher car when it made
a left turn into the path of the
patrol car, said r;forts._ Hat
cher said he turned on his left
turn signal but Deputy _Pless
said he didn't see a signal,
reports said. A witness was
uoted as saying he saw a
aashing signal from the Hat
cher car, Trooper Toles
reported.

crease averagisf $lO a week
each when the Mayor and City
Council adopted the 1986-87
budget
The city's payroll in
1985-86 totaled $1,061,032 and
it is proeiected to be $1,162,697
for 1986-87. On a strict percen
tage basis, the amount of in
crease amounts to 9.58 percent
but City Manager Grady
MecCalmon said the city durins
the last fiscal year was face
with ad?ting to federal over
time and compensatory time
standards. He also said the
1985-86 figures are
preliminary.
Summerville has 10
departments.

Services Committee members
approved the raises as lgmrt. of

defense expenditures up to the
$292-billion level of the overall
federal budget resolution
recently approved by the
