Care Center in LaFayette

In the afternoon they visited
Mrs. Frances Pledger in Sum
merville and her daughter,
Mrs. Carolyn Efipley, Sam and
Jonathan of Charlotte, N. C.,
and learned that Griffin
Pledger had been a patient in
Chattooga County Hospital
several days. A speedy
recovery is wished for both Mr.
and Mrs. Pledger.

ried recently.

Tort Reform
Chamber Goal
The Chattooga County
Chamber of Commerce and the
Business Council of Georgia
(formerly Georgia Chamber of
Commerce) have begun an ef
fort toward tort reform in the
General Assembly next year,
according to Sue Spivey, ex
ecutive vice president of the
Chattooga Chamber.
According to the Business
Council, Mrs. Spivey said, 294
businesses have responded to
a state survey ‘‘and nearly 50
percent report insurance
premium increases of 100 per
cent over the past two years.
Eight percent responded that
the cost has increased over 500
percent. The cost increases
were usually coupled with
higher deductibles, or lower

on five proposed reforms: (1)
Revising the current doctrine
of joint and several liability to
ensure that defendants would
be liable only for the portion of
damages that can be directly
attributed to each. (2)
Disclosure to juries of col
lateral sources of’ compensation
that plaintiffs have received for
the same injury. (3) Capping
non-economic losses an
punitive damages at a ceiling
of $250,000. (4) Givinf judges
authority to modify jury
awards. (5) Structuring set
tlements so that awards of
more than SIOO,OOO are spread
into periodic payments rather
than one “windg;ll" payment.
