Measles Danger This Year
An outbr;ieak of measles
may pose a danger to young
people this year, said Phfl Ben
son, Chattooga County public
health educator.
“If you are under 30, make
sure you have been vaccinated
for measles. Parents should
make sure their children are im
munized for measles as well as
other necessary shots for pre
school or school as required in
Georgia,” said Benson.
Recently, cases of measles
have been reported in several
states, including Georgia.
Health officials recommend
that all children be vaccinated
The Summerville News, Thursday, July 31, 1986
at 15 months of age. Anyone
born after 1956 who is not sure
of having been immunized
should contact his or her physi
cian or county health depart
ment, Benson said. And
anyone who develops a skin
rash and high fever should get
medical treatment right away,
he added.
““Measles can spread very
quickly and cause severe com
plications,”” he said. “One in 10
people with measles develogs
ear infections or pneumonia. In
rare cases, encephalitis, an in
fection on the brain, and even
death may result. Prevention is
the best cure.”
