Trion Police officer L. D. |
McCary said the trio was hurt |
in a car-truck mishap at 8:08 |
a.m. Tuesday on Allgood [
Street at Park Avenue in
Trion. They were identified as '
Valerie Kay Edwards, 16, 203 |

all of Trion. They were taken to |

for treatment and later |

Officer McCary said a car ‘

may be erased by the gas rate
increase).
Referring to the overall
budget document, Mayor
Woods said, ‘I think we have
a tight budget.”” And he also
*said the tax millage rate was
“mighty conservative.” Coun
cilman Larry Stansell abstain
ed from the vote on setting the
tax millage. All other Coun
cilmen voted for the measure.
The Council approved the
rehiring of the Rome accoun
ting firm of Read, Martin and
Slickman to audit the town’s
accounts this coming year.
Because auditors were busy
with the town's books, the
June financial statement was
not available, the mayor
explained.
Safeco, the town's in
surance firm has discontinued
all the town's policies except
for workmen's compensation,
Mayor Woods saicf but the
town's coverage has been plac

equipment that there was no
choice but to buy a new unit.
NEW X-RAY
The Authority decided to
buy a new GE unit rather than
a refurbished unit at a cost of
some $34,000 less than a new
unit. Guarantees for both
pieces would be identical.
Referring to the Authori
ty’s decision to replace the ex
isting equipment, Dr. Spivey
said, “From the staff, thank
you very much.”
Last year, the hospital's X
ray department recorded a
surplus of $150,339 and it an
ticipates a surplus of $164,615
this year, according to Mrs.
Wollstein.
The hospital’s engineer was
to have visited the facility
Wednesday to begin a survey
on the best location in the
hospital for the new equip
ment. The Authority will
decide on a location and a
financing method at a later
meeting, according to Charles
Williams, chairman.
About two-thirds of the
Lifeline equipment has arrived
at the hospital, it was announc
ed at the meeting and the rest
is expected around the first of
September.
Mrs. Wollstein said a staff

said.
Four peo§le were hurt in a
two-car crash on county road
93 north of Trion at 1:30 p.m.
Sunday, said Georgia Sjt’ate
Patrol Trooper Bill DeHart. He
identified the injured as James
Hoyt Williams Jr., 27, Lisa
Wifiiams. 26, Allison R.
Williams, 3, and Justin E.
Williams, 5, all of Trion. They
were taken to Chattooga Coun

sold by Riegel Textile Corp. to
individuals who reportedly |
plan to develop the p?ots into }
subdivisions. |
Stansell asked the mayor
about one individual who Kas
bought one of the lots being
able to connect to town ser
vices a short distance away.
Woods said the town's
engineers are studying the
matter to recommend a policy
to the town for handling all the
Blots, not just the one outlined 1
v Stansell. The mayor said it 1
may be six months before such |
a policy is ready. l
“I think six months is
ridiculous,” Stansell replied.
“I'll be glad to tell him,”
said Woods. ‘“He's putting
pressure on you ... "
“T'll handle the pressure;
that's why Iran..." Stansell
replied, saying that the town
needed to firoyide an early
answer on the issue.
“I ‘can't promise him an
answer in six months,” the
Mayor said. “‘l've had the same
question from some other pro
perty owners."
Williams asked the mayor |

operations. It plans to visit
several nursing homes in the
region that have such pro
grams and then report bacfi to
the Authority, she indicated.
MEDICAID
The executive director also
said Medicaid Monday increas
ed the daily allocation to Oak
View Nursing Home from
$33.45 to $35.61 per patient
per day. The Authority increas
ed its semi-private rate from
$34.50 to $35.65. The private
rate of $36.50 will remain the
same. Medicaid also required
more nursing hours per
patient.
A proposal that the
Authority contract with the
Northwest Georgia Mental
Health and Mental Retarda
tion Center was referred to the
hospital's medical staff.
The Authority asked that
additional repair bids be ob
tained on the hos(i)ital truck.
One estimate called for repairs
of more than SI,OOO.
The Authority also discuss
ed recommendations of names
to the August term Chattooga
County Grand Jury for two
positions on the Authority.
The terms of Williams and Ira
Pollard expire this year. The
Jury will select two people
from the names submitted to
the Jury on Monday. Williams
and Pofiard said they had not
decided whether to seek reap
pointment to the Authority.
Meanwhile, the panel
granted full privileges to
emergency room physicians
Dr. Frank Matovu, Igr. Michael
McLarnon and Dr. Thomas
Weldon. Provisional approval
was granted emergency room
physician Dr. Ted ScoEgins.
It was announced that Dr.

road 169 near Trion at 7:35

how the town stood in its water
supply due to the drought.
“We're holding our own,"”
the mayor replied, adding that
he was depending on advice
from Riegel Textile Corp.,
which supplies the town with
its water.
The Council approved
$1,897.97 for members who at
tended the recent Georgia
Municipal Assn. convention.
TEAM COSTS
It also okayed the payment
of $2,000 for the 12-and-under
Trion boys to Fo to the state
baseball playoffs in Statesboro
and another $2,000 if the
14-and-under boys team makes
the playoffs.
The mayor explained that
the new budget includes some
$25,000 to run a sewer line to
the town's new industrial park.
And this year's budget, the
mayor told the Council, will
contain money for unemploy
ment compensation for the
first time in several years. The
town will pay the cost of
whatever compensation has to
be paid, rather than paying a
flat percentage rate gased on
its payroll, the mayor said. The
method is likely to save the
town money, he added.
OCCUPANCY
The hospital ended the year
with a 33.48 percent occupan
cy rate, according to a report
given to the Authority. This
compares to a 34.56 percent oc
cupancy rate for 1984-85.
There were 880 admissions
during the last fiscal year, com
pared to 825 the previous year.
There were 3,788 patient days
during 1985-86, compared to
3,910 the previous year.
Emergency room visits last
fiscal year amounted to 5,752,
compared to 5,506 in 1984-85,
the report indicated.

rape’’ problems and child
abuse. he said. The program is
being featured in Atlanta’s
eighth grades and in some
Floyd County schools, Benson
added. He said he will be glad
to explain the program to any
groufl.
Children are becoming sex
ually active at much younger
ages, he said, even into early
junior high school.
Most teens are ‘‘very ig
norant’ of contraception, he
said, adding that the word has
become a ‘‘red flag” for many
parents. Assertiveness train
ing is effective for many teens,
he said, but for others, con
traception may be the only
answer to teen pregnancies.
‘“‘ Absolutely not,” Benson
replied when asked if the health
department encouraged abor
tion as a form of birtfi control.
“It’'s not a birth control
measure, it's abortix;f a life.”
The department is also man
dated gy state law not to
counsel teens about abortion
for birth control Benson said.
The speaker said he may be
reached at 935-2366.
