Auxiliary Sweeps State Awards
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 129
brought home a number of awards from
the state convention at Jekyll Island Ju
ly 25. Publicity Chairman Betty Wilhelm
received all three state trophies for public
relations, and the unit also received first
filace in the state for its Veterans
ehabilitation Program. Unit 129 also
received certificates for reaching member
ship goals and for the quality of its scrap

District President Receives Awards
The Seventh District received several state awards dur
ing the annual American Legion Auxiliary convention
July 25. Seventh District Auxiliary President Betty
Haney received the Golden Peacock Award for best
membership poster and a certificate for achieving
reaching the Gold Membership Goal in the district. Pic

their work in the state. He
especially was proud of the
work done at Girls State. He
also commented on the
children and youth program,
Special OlmeJics, schlarship
programs and the aid given to
the veterans programs.

pressed her appreciation for
the reconstruction and
beautification program at this
facility sponsored by the
American Legion Auxiliary. A
large poster with pictures of
the different imfirovements
made possible by the Auxiliary
was on display, including the
metal table, chairs and um
brella purchased by Unit 129.
Unit President Ovelene
Witt said: “As many of you
will remember, Auxiliary Unit
129 sponsored a Christmas gift
wrapping fiorogram at Wal-
Mart to help with their con
tribution to this project. Many
thanks to everyone who helped
us by letting us wrap your
packages.”
Unit 129 did not return
from the state convention
empty-handed. It brought
home all three state trophies
for public relations. These in
clucf:e The Mildred S. Kelly
Radio Trophy Award started
in 1963, The Mrs. G. C. Tennell
Award began in 1966 and The
Dorothy Butts Over-all Com
munications Trophy, first
awarded in 1976.
Unit 129 also received first
place in state for the veterans
rehabilitation program, a
membership certificate and a
scrapbook certificate.
Seventh District President
Betty Haney also received a
certificate for the district mak
ing its goal and the Golden
Peacock award for best
membership poster.

Haney said, ‘‘Unit 129 sincere
ly appreciates the support and
participation of the citizens of
Chattooga County. Without
your help it would be impossi
ble for us to reach our goals,
our thanks to each and
everyone of you.”

Incidents Probed
Summerville police
answered a number of mostly
routine domestic disturbance
calls during the last week, ac
cordintg to reports,
Officer Gary Ford said
Doris Bramlett, 23, 114
McGinnis Cir., reported being
bitten on the lei by a black dog
as she was walking across the
playgound on the street Mon
day. The dog was picked up by
the animal control department,
officer Ford said. The dog bite
didn't break the skin.
Officer Ford Monday also
investigated vehicles blocking
the street on Smith Street
following a complaint from a
