Bikeathon
-
Chairman
Announced
Ellen Martin has been nam
ed fall chairman for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation in Menlo.
She is planning a walk and
bikeathon this year to raise
funds for foundation research.
C{stic fibrosis is the most
deadly inherited disease in
children and young adults. A
child is born with cystic
fibrosis when each of his or her
foarents donate the cystic
ibrosis gene. At present there
is no test or symptoms to iden
tify carriers of the gene. The
disease causes the body to pro
duce abnormally large
amounts of thick-gluey mucus
that blocks breathing and
digestion.
Symptoms of cystic fibrosis
include recurrent wheezing,
poor weight gain with ex
cessive appetite, excessively
salty taste to the skin, and
pneumonia more than once.
Because its symptoms are
so similar to other lung condi
tions, cystic fibrosis is often
misdiagnosed as other condi
tions such as asthma, bron
chitis, or allergies.
