Former Chattooga Countian Performs
Sammy Freeman, Chattanooga, Tenn., a former resi
dent of Chattooga County, performs ‘“Cacklin’ Hen" on
his fiddle during last weekend's 6th annual
Southeastern Fiddler's Convention at Menlo. He was
not a contestant but was asked to perform for the crowd
attending the convention. (Staff Photo by Earl

County Escapes
Beetle Attacks
‘ Chattooga County seems to
have escaped an invasion by
the Southern pine beetle this
'~ year, although the pest seems
to be attacking pine trees in
~other parts of Georgia.
Fred Hall of the ghattooga
office of the Georgia Forestry
Commission said his office
hasn’t received a single report
of pine beetle attacks this
summer.
“*“We'd like to know if
anybody seems to be having
trouble with damage to their
trees,” Hall said. “We'll come
out and look at from one tree
on ’lll% no matter what size.”
e Forestry Commission
has had a number of calls from
homeowners about hardwood
trees dying from the drought
this summer, Hall said.
Because of local efforts to con
serve water and cut down on
the outside use of water, advice
on what to do about the dying
trees has been on a case-by- !
case basis, he added. i
The drought doesn’t seem |
to be the reason for the lack of |
local pine beetle damage this |
year, glall said, “‘I don’t think |
any kind of weather Kkills t
them.” |
: In a bad year, foresters say
tree damage in the state due to
the beetles can amount to
- SB-10-million.
| DETECTION
To make matters worse, it
is very difficult to detect the
beetles until it is too late. On
ly small, whitish popcorn
shaped blobs on the outer bark
of trees betray its presence —
until the tree turns brown and
dies.
The beetle also carries a
fungus on its body that stains
and streaks the inner wood of
pine trees blue, decreasing its
value even as salvage wood.
The beetles usually begin
boring holes about halgwa up
the trunk and spread out fyrom
that point. Homeowners
sometimes use trombone-type
sprayers to reach the trunEs
with Lindane. But for very tall
pines, the treatment may in
volve commercial tree
companies.
Homeowners are usually
hardest hit by the beetle |
because their trees aren't |
sprayed or thinned on a regular I
basis. And both activities can
be dan§erous to the
uninitiated.
University of Georgia
researchers are developing a
safer, slow-release polymer
form of Lindane that will last
for two years and won't rub off.
It’s being designed for use
especially in urban areas and
parks.
