merville plans to appoint a task
force to join a nationwide effort
in reducing teen pregnancies
and infant mortagity in the
community.
He signed a proclamation
on the Froposal Tuesday after
noon after discussing the issue
with Chattooga County Public
Health Educator Phil Benson
and Martha Blansit, director of
the North Georgia Crisis
Pregnancy Center, 192 North
Commerce St., Summerville.
PROCLAMATION
The proclamation reads as
follows:
““Whereas teen-age
pregnancy has become a na
tional problem and ranks
Georgia fifth highest by con
tribution to more than 18 per
cent of all births annually to
women under age 20.
“Whereas one out of 10
teen-age girls will become preg
nant during 1986 in Georgia
which places intense demands
emotionally and physically on

resulting from low birth weight
babies.

babies born to girls under 20
are birth defect victims who
will suffer physical and mental
handicaps for the rest of their
lives. . .
“Whereas teen pre%nancy
and accomfuanying problems is
a crisis affecting our present
and our future. ..
“Whereas everyone is in
volved in a teen-age pregnancy
is touched by the event: the
young mother, the unborn
child, her parents, her partner,
her family and society.
“Therefore as mayor of
Summerville, I hereby wish to
join in the national goal of
reducing infant deaths to no
more than 9 per 1,000 births,

t{ tax digest may ge ready
shortly after the first of
September, according to Tax
Commissioner Hugh SOn Hall.
His office was proofing the
first set of changes near mid
week, Hall said, and a second
set of changes was bein}g keyed
into the computer at Rome.
The changes involve ad
dresses and property, Hall
indicated.

The extension of time was
mutually agreed to by David
Archer, attorney for Tony
Gilleland, and by Michael A.
O'Quinn, attorney for Sheriff
Gary McConnell, and approv
ed by Judge Harold Murphy.
In addition, Archer was ex
cused by Judge Murphy from
any personal apfiearances in
the court through last Satur
day due to being out of the
state.
Court records indicate that
Gilleland and 13 witnesses
have been deposed and inter
rogatories have been given to
Sheriff McConnell. Most of the
deYositions were taken in late
July.
Gilleland filed a $1.5-million
lawsuit against the sheriff last
December, saying the sheriff
had fired him without justifica
tion in October, 1985. He also
said the sheriff had slandered
him following the dismissal.
Sheriff Nchonnell said he
had fired Gilleland for alleged-

Tonight In Summerville
A leadership confererice for chairmen of all committees
of the Chattooga County Unit, American Heart Associa
tion, will be helfi at 5:30 p.m. today in the community room
of the Farmers and Merchants gank.
Mrs. Pat Hartline has been instrumental in coordinating
individual programs and in obtaining chairmen for the
various committees. Persons interested in volunteering
their time may call her at 895-4585 or 857-4761 or Jimmy
Bennett, locar Unit president, at 734-2634.
The local unit has only recently been organized. Besides
Bennett, officers include Marsha Pritchett, vice president;
Dr. Stephen Mineart, medical advisor; Ruth Locklear,
secretary; and Phil Stowe, treasurer.
The American Heart Association is a nonprofit, volun
tary health organization funded by J}rivate contributions.
It's goal is to reduce early death and disability from heart
disease, stroke and related disorders. It funds medical
research, professional and public education and communi
ty service programs.
