SHERIFF McCONNELL, INV. GREG LATTA, DADE SHERIFF PHIL STREET
Escapee McGuire Captured Near Williams Road Command Post
Three Escape,
Two Captured
from front page
S3O when they escaped — if
they had anything.
Between 40 and 50 law en
forcement %ersonnel from
throughout the area were par
ticipating in the search Yate
Wednesday after employees for
Stanley Selman, Williams
Road, spotted the trio in the
loft of one of Selman’s barns
around 12:45 p.m., McConnell
said.
A State Patrol helicopter
from Atlanta arrived on the
scene a short time thereafter,
as did the bloodhound unit
from the Walker County Cor
rectional Institute. Chattooga
Sheriff's Office Fersonnel were
called out in force, as were
Summerville Police officers.
Also participating in the search
were Dade, Bartow and Floyd
County authorities, along with
members of the Chattooia
County Rescue Squad, the
Georgia Game and Fish Com
mission and the Georgia'
Forestry Commission.
BURGLARY
McConnell said the trio
allegedly broke into the home
of Hugh Don Hughes.
Williams Road, after leaving
the Selman farm. At the
HUfihes house, they allegedly
took two bottles of whiskey, a
shotgun, rifle, ammunition and
food, the sheriff said.
Around 2:30 p.m., officers
chased down Avans behind the
log cabin home of Edwin Ham
by, Summerville Rte. 3,
Williams Road, McConnell
said. Avans was ‘‘pinned
down"” by the circling
helicopter and persistent
bloodhounds, the sheriff said,
and although the prisoner had
a rifle with him at the time of
his arrest, he didn't offer any
resistance.
Officers then felt confident
they had McGuire and Goins
trapped in a large area between
Wifiiams Roa(f Trion-Teloga
Road and Highway 337.
Bloodhounds were especially
active in a densely woots)ed area
near the Hamby house around
3 to 3:30 p.m. but no trace of
the pair was found at that time.
gheriff McConnell directed
the search from near the Jerry
Hamby house on Williams
Road, a short distance from
where Avans was captured.
For almost an hour, McCon
nell, Dade County Sheriff Phil
Street, Chattooga Sheriff's In
vestigator Greg Latta and a
reporter for The News were at
the site.
HAD SHOTGUN
Around 5 p.m. McGuire,
who was thought to be carry
ing a shotgun stolen from the
Hughes residence, was cap
tured behind a tree in a bushy
area near the Jerry Hamby
residence. One source said
McGuire allegedly claimed he
had been at the location for
about two hours.
When captured, McGuire
had a shotgun, a plastic gar
bage sack and a red bag with
an Atlanta Falcons emblem
containing canned goods,
peanut butter, bread, crackers
and ammunition, as well as a
bottle of rum, a bottle of gin,
and a plastic jug of water. All
were believed stolen from the
Hughes residence, authorities
said.
Authorities indicated that
McGuire, who was considered
the most dangerous of the
three, did not offer resistance
when he was captured.
The location of the search
area is about five miles from
downtown Summerville and
Sheriff McConnell said he felt
the trio had gotten that far on
foot after the escape.
When they escaped, they
were all wearing jail issue
clothing, blue pants and blue
tee-shirts over orange gym
shorts, McConnell said.
The incident began at 8:50
p.m. Tuesday when an elec
trical storm caused a power
outage in downtown Summer
vilie. including power to the
jail.
According to re%:.xlations of
the State Fire Marshal, all elec
trically operated doors at the
jail automatically unlock in
case of a power failure, the
sheriff said. However, the jail's
standby generator is supposed
to come on automatically
within 30 to 45 seconds after
an outage, restore power and
relock the doors, he added.
CHECKUP WEEKLY
However, the generator fail
ed to work and jail personnel
didn’t get it working until after
regular electrical power had
been restored, McConnell said.
The generator is checked week
ly, he said, and has previously
worked without any problem.
It was being checked on
Wednesday, the sheriff said.
About 10 inmates were in
volved in a meeting of
Alcholics Anonymous in the
jail's all-purpose room, McCon
nell said, when the power went
off. Jailers and booking person
nel began movinfi the prisoners
back to their cells immediate
ly using the jail's automatic
battery-powered emergency
lights, tl?e sheriff said.
However, there were no
emergency lights in the all
