Tech Academic Scholarships
Georgia Institute of
Technology is offering scholar
ships for academic excellence,
much the same as the institute
offers athletic scholarships, the
Summerville-Trion Rotary
Club was told at noon Monday.
Bill Lee, who works in
development for Georgia Tech,
was the luncheon speaker and
said controversy has surround
ed the concept of academic
scholarships, mainly because
there isn't sufficient money to
provide scholarships to all
qualified youngsters.
The scholarships all are
financed privat,elé. Lee said,
pointing out that Georgia Tech
receives 27 percent of its funds
from Fublic sources and 73 per
cent from private donors.
The scfiolarships are dif
ferent from student assistance
based on need, the speaker

pointed out. One pu?ose is to
attract students to Tech who
could attend any other school
in the nation, includin

Main purpose of the
scholarshigs is to reward

students, challenge teachers to
avoid mediocre efforts and
boost Tech's reputation, Lee
indicated.
i To be considered, a student
within the state must score at
least 1350 on the college SAT
and non-resident students
must score at least 1400, The
SAT score accounts for 50 per
cent of the evaluation of each
student applicant, Lee said,
while leadership activities and
awards account for 27 percent,

from high school math and
science teachers count for nine
percent of the total score.
Applicants go through a
rigid screening process, first at
the district level and then at
| Tech, Lee said. Chattooga's
Boyce Dooley, who introduced
Lee Monday, is on the local
district screening committee.
Some $500,000 is available
annually for the g)roFram. Lee
said, and the school hopes to
expand it in the future.
The program has three

It takes around $75,000 to
SBO,OOO to endow a $5,500

Georgia Tech. Following inter
views and reviews, 25
Presidential Scholarships, 47
Tuition Scholarships and 36

awarded and the rest were
awarded merit funds of SI,OOO
each.
Not all the students in the
first three levels accepted the
