Storm Causes Electric Power Outage
Welcome showers dumged
more rain on most of Chat
tooga County Tuesday night —
but spectacular lightning
associated with the rain
producing storm also knocked
out electrical power over a
widespread area.
A total of 1.1 inches of rain
fell in the Summerville area
Tuesday night, according to
Ralph Willingham, Back Ber
ryton Road. And Billy Kilgore
Jr. said .9 inch of rain fell in the
Trion area that night.
Since last Thursday, a total
of 1.85 inches of rain has fallen
in the Summerville area, Will
inlfham indicated, while
Kilgore measured 1.6 inches of
rainfall at his Trion residence.
The severe li’lghtning
associated with Tuesday
night’s storm knocked out elec
trical power to the downtown
Summerville area and some
parts of Menlo, according to
Georgia Power Co. It was off
for around 45 minutes to one
hour in the area, which includ
ed downtown Summerville and
the Chattooga County Jail.
Around 3,100 to 3,200
customers were without power
for 20 to 25 minutes west of
Taylor's Ridge in the area serv
eéd by North LGel(:rgia Electric
ooperative. Lightning trip
botl!.)e breakers at the utifi(:g
company's main substation,
plunging the area into
darkness during the fierce
storm. Some transformers also
were hit and lightning split
some trees, knockinfi‘ them
down on power lines. The utili
ty company had all downed
lines repaired by 9 a.m.
Wednesday, said the utility's
Cotton Greeson.
