Indians Set For 1986 Football Season
The Chattooga Indians are busy in pre-season drills
in anticipation of the upcoming 1986 football season
%pener Segt. 5 against Lakeview at the Little Big Horn.
he squad has been working hard in drills to improve
on their 1-9 1985 record.
The News interviewed head coach Buddy Windle on
the upcoming season and the interview follows. Win
dle is in his tenth year as head coach at CHS.
THE NEWS: How has practice for this season gone?
WINDLE: Real good, but only time will tell. This
is the first year as a head coach that I've never been
able to hold two-a-days in pads. They moved the star
ting dates up to Sept. 5 this year and since the teachers
went back to work on Aug. 18th, (which is the first legal
day to be in pads), we weren’t able to hold the two-a
days. The ki(fis handled the heat real well. We got a lot
of teaching accomplished. This group has t%le best
overall attitude since I've been back. We have been well
pleased with the attitude. It was just like tonight (Tues
day night) the kids all seemed like they were having fun,
they seemed to enjoy it. They have geen enthusiastic;
they know they have a job to do and are doing it so far.
}I"HE NEWYS: How does this team stack up to last
year's team?
WINDLE: We have more kids and they are in bet
ter shape. The problem last year was that we had only
25 or 30 kids and we couldn’t get a true look at them.
A lot of the kids we had counted on last year had per
sonal problems and had to (3uit. This year we are a lot
stronger and a better attitude. Most of our skilled peo
le wi%l have another year’s experience and I think we
Eave better senior lead‘t,arship. Our line should be a whole
lot better.
I Believe The Kids Are Going
To Play Their Heart Out
THE NEWS: Do you have any glaring weaknesses?
WINDLE: I guess it is depth, team-wise. We have
some people that have good size but have never played
the position they are in now or haven’t played foot[‘),all
in several years. The particular depth problem on
defense is at linebacker and on offense is at running
back.
THE NEWS: What are your bright spots?
WINDLE: Attitude of the Elayers and their work
habits. We are well pleased with their efforts. I cannot
fault a kid that comes to practice every day, works his
butt off and gives you 100 percent in a game and if he
gets whipped then he is out-personelled. As loni as he
gives the effort and is competitive I can live wit that.
Ten years ago as a head coach I couldn’t even live with
that but I think times have changed. The days of a
coach telling a 150-pound kid he is going to whip a 190
pounder is over, they aren’t going to do it. Again, the
attitude has made a biE difference. I'm not irritable, and
the kids aren’t irritable. It really makes it more en
joyable for the kids.
I believe the kids are goix;lg( to play their hearts out.
You have to let everything take care of itself. There are
times when we just might get whipEed but anything can
happen if you want it bad enough.
’FHE I\YEWS: How does this year’s competition
stack up?
WIP?DLE: Pepperell, Cedartown, Carrollton, Villa

Rica (a sleeper), Rossville and LaFayette should be real
g’ tough. The difference is that this year’s team will
efinitely be competitive in ALL games this year. Last
year we were out by the half, and we just played out
the contract in the second half.
THE NEWS: What offense will you use this year?
WINDLE: The split back veer. It is what we ran
What The Kids Need Most Is
Encouragement and Support
At Home
when I was here before and we ran it 2 years ago. It
utilizes our offense, small running backs, a lot of
quickmen and easier blocking techniques. We try to
teach the linemen to just come off the football. It helps
us with plays against bigger lines like Pepperell’s. You
don't have to actually b%ock them, just read them and
do the opposite of what they do. We have some kids that
can’t block 260-pounders all night. They just can't do
it, so what we do is try to hope their man makes men
tal mistakes. It is more of an option type offense. The
key is the quarterback being agle to Kandle pressure.
With the run we're okay, we need to work on our pass
ing game.
THE NEWS: What kind of defense will you play?
WINDLE: We will run basically the 5-4 which is vir
tually what we ran 6 years ago. Last year we did a lot
of stunting because we were real small and when you
stunt, if anybody clears it they are gone. This year we
are bigger and will do what we did six years ago. Like
I said we will be bigger in size. We have worked real
hard on technique ang fundamentals. People may score
on us but I thin% we are going to make them go tKe long
way. We gave up the big play last year entirely too
much. The position that concerns us most is linebacker.
We have two sophomores who haven't played. They are
ood kids who will &,et after you but Ehysically they can
go just so much. We lost Stanley Edmondson due to
an appendicitis operation. We were pleased with his
play. We have had to move people around and keep drill
ing them. What scares you is say, Pepperell’s 240-pound
tackles, we can’t have our linebackers step up and take
them on all night. He's not going to win that gattle. We
have to gear a defense that keeps moving the
linebackers and hide them a little bit.
THE NEWS: Why don’t more kids go out for sports,
in particular football?
WINDLE: I think it is the times. It's easier to get
a car and the peer pressure is tough — on kids. What
the kids need is more encouragement and support at
home. That’s not just in sports but at school, too. It's
not as great an honor as it used to be to play football.
We Need The Fans’ Support
You have to really love it nowadays to play it. One thing
that has hurt is people have forced it to be a year round
job, weights in tge off-season. A lot of people don’t want
to pay the price that it takes to get the job done.
practice plays, blocking assignments and
defensive reads. The Indians open their
season Se}gt. 5 at home against the
Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Warriors.

Elsberry, Blake Campbell, Terry Dunaway and Todd
Barnes. Not shown are Stanley Edmondson and Rickie
Grant. Back row are Managers, Kyle Duke, Tracy Price,
Brian Salmon, Fred Powell, Chase Payne, Shannon
White and John Oxford.
THE NEWS: What do you feel the chances are of
Trion and Chattooga resuming their rivalry on the foot
ball field sometime in the future?
WINDLE: I don’t think it will happen. Financially
it would be great but there would be friction. I don't
think it would come from students or players but from
the older people.
