Darden Rated By ASC
The bipartisan American
Security Council (ASC) today
released its 1986 National
Security Voting Index, and it
shows a marked contrast bet
ween Georgia's U.S. Senate
candidates with incumbent
Sen. Mack Mattingly (R) scor
ing a perfect 100 percent, and
challenger Rep. Wyche Fowler
(D-5) 33 Fercent.
The Index measures the
voting record of each member
of the U. S. Con%ress against
public opinion polls on current
defense and foreign policy
issues. It has been pub?ished
every two years since 1970 by
the ASC, coordinator of the
Coalition for Peace Through
Strength. Both Mattingly and
Fowler belong to the bipartisan
Coalition, as do all the
members of the Georgia
delegation.
“We think voters have a
right to know what the record
shows,” said ASC President
John Fisher. ‘“We need a Con
firess that reflects the public’s
road support for a strong
U.S. defense and foreign
policl\;."
The Index shows strong
ratings for the rest of the
state’s Congressional delega
tion. Scoring perfect 100 per
cent ratings were two
Democrats and two
Republicans: Rep. Richard Ra
(D-3), Rep. Pat gwindall (R-4{
Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-6), and
Rep. George Darden (D-7).
Others in the delegation
also reflect concern with securi
ty issues: Senator Sam Nunn
(I}S) 90 percent; Rep. Lindsey
Thomas (D-1) 80 percent; Rep.
Charles Hatcher (D-2) 75 per
cent; Rep. Roy Rowland (D-8)
90 percent; Rep. Ed Jenkins
(D-9) 80 percent; and Rep.
Doug Barnard (D-10) 90
percent.
