Students at Summerville Elementary
School are exploring the traditions, dress
and foods of other countries as National
School Lunch Week is observed through
Friday. Students of Mrs. Joe Fay Denson
and the lunchroom staff dress up for

Week Observed
Local students are getting
a taste of life in other countries
as National School Lunch
Week is observed this week. In
addition to a different ethnic
meal each day, Summerville
Elementary students are ex
ploring the customs dress and
traditions of each country.
A number of classes is join
ing the lunchroom staff in
wearing costumes of the
featureg country each day this
week.
“The children have learned
so much through this project,”
said Rosemary McWhorter of
her third grade students. ‘‘This
has been a wonderful ex
perience for them.”
“We want to do something
extra for the kids during this
week,”” said Cosette Rit
tenberry, lunchroom super
visor at the school. ‘‘The staff
has worked hard to sponsor the
poster contest and wear the dif
ferent costumes as they serve

makes a world of difference.”
Each day of this school
week a different ethnic group's
food and culture is being
featured. The ethnic menus for
the week are British, Hispanic,
Italian, Oriental and an ethnic
group of the school’s choice.
The British menu offers fish
and chips, the Hispanic
features tacos. The Italian
menu is a turkey sausage piz
za, and the Oriental menu of
fers sweet and sour pork or
chicken.
National School Lunch
Week is sponsored by the
American School Food Service
Association and cosponsored
in Georgia by the Georgia
School Food Service
Association.
