Christmas
Decking the halls with hol
ly or hanging mistletoe are
nothing new, according to *Na
tional Wildlife'" magazine,
These and other plants and
flowers associated with
Christmas have long tradi
tions. The magazine is a bimon
thly publication of the National
Wi{cfiife Federation, the na
tion's largest conservation
organization.
In ancient Rome, holly
wreaths were sent to newly
married couples to express con
gratulations and good will.
Like other peoples around the
world, the Romans believed
that the holly warded off evil
spirits. In England it protected
against witches, dogs and wild
beasts. At Christmas, every
house, church, street corner,
and market place in London
was decoratetf with holly. Upon
discovering holly in America,
the early settlers were over
joyed to find a touch of **home”
in the new land.
The Indians of Penn
sylvania used holly as a badge
of courage, while New Jersey
Indians used the wood for
tomahawk handles. Tribes to
the south drank holly tea to
give them strength.
Mistletoe has an equally an
cient history. Druidesquseg the
plant to cure many ills, and In
dian tribes chewed the leaves
to relieve toothaches. In recent
years a drug was derived from
mistletoe to lower blood
pressure.
The custom of kissing
under the mistletoe comes from
the Norse legend of Balder, the
sun god. Fearing for her son'’s
life, Frigga extracted promises
from every living thing not to
kill Balder. Unfortunately, she
forgot the mistletoe.
The rival god Loki made a
sharp arrow o% mistletoe wood
and shot Balder. As the myth
goes, Balder's light (the sun)
lessened, and Frigga's tears
turned to mistletoe gerries. So
impressed were the gods that
they saved Balder. Frigga was
so overjoyed that she iissed
everyone who walked beneath
the mistletoe.
In Mexican homes, the
f)oinsettia is known as *‘Flor de
a Noche-buena” — 6
Christmas Eve flower. And in
homes across America, this col
orful plant has become as much
a part of Christmas tradition
as the Christmas tree.
Americans inherited the
tradition of highlighting
Christmas with poinsettias
from our Mexican neighbors.
Numerous legends attemflt to
explain its popularity there.
According to one, many years
ago a young child in Cuer
navaca wept because she had
no flowers to place at the
manger.
An angel appeared to the
child and directed her to pick
a weed from the roadside, pgace
it before the altar, and wait.
The child obeyed, and soon
after the weed was placed at
the Nativity scene, it was
transformed into a tall,
beautiful plant bearing the
whorl of scarlet leaves that
became the poinsettia.
The plant was introduced
into the United States about
1830 by Joel Roberts Poinsett,
the first U. S. minister to Mex
ico arlld an glble bot.anisl:il After
supplying his own greenhouses
in ({reenville. 5.C.., he
distributed plants to his
friends and to botanical
gardens,

Five State Committee
members were elected at the re
cent Democratic Caucus and
Convention held in LaFayette.
Jerry McGee, Roger Fults,
Susan Sarling, McCracken K.
Poston, and Donna Street were
elected to four year terms to
serve on the State Committee
of the Georgia Democratic
Party.
Carl Ellis, the 53rd District
chairman, commented, ‘“We
had an excellent turnout of in
terested Democrats and due to
the number of capable, willing,
and deserving candidates, we
had a difficult choice in selec
ting only five State Committee
members to represent our
district.
“It was almost unfair not to
elect at least a sixth member
because of the close race run by
Ben Mosley of Chattooga
County.
“] ‘'am pleased to observe
that the people elected will
represent the views of the ma
jority of our district and I am
secure in the knowledfe that
these individuals will work
diligently in their capacities as
representatives of the 53rd
District to the Georgia
Democratic Party.”
