HOLIDAY
WEIGHT CONTROL
During the holiday season,
weight control or weight loss is
a difficult task. Most in
dividuals are invited to special
occasions on a regular basis
throughout the holiday season.
Realistically, weight
maintenance may be more
reasonable to expect than
weight loss. However, there are
several strategies that can be
used to help you enjoy the holi
day season, and at the same
time exert some control over
food intake and your weight.
First of all, you should plan
ahead and decide what your
eating behavior will be at
special occasions. Of the foods
most likely to be served, which
foods will you allow yourself to
eat and which should you
avoid? While dieting, you
should allow yourself one meal
during the week at which to
have a few ‘‘extras.” With
careful pre-planning, it is possi
ble to incorporate special
events into your normal
schedule.
Secondly, eat a small
amount of food before going to
the event so that you won't ar
rive on an empty stomach and
eat everything in sight. A
small amount of low calorie
foods such as carrots, celery
sticks and other vegetables,
eaten prior to the event, should
suffice.
If there is a long buffet
table with a variety of foods,
walk along the table to see
what food choices are available
before indulging. Then take a
plate, place the foods on the
plate, and leave the serving

area. Don't just snack from the
serving table because you can
lose count of how much food
you're eating.
Eat the foods you like best
first. Eat slowly, enjoy the food
and you should feel more
satisfied with less.
If you eat more than you
plan, don't overreact and make
more out of the situation than
is warranted. In a year’s time,
one day will not ruin your diet.
However, remember there will
be many occasions throughout
the holiday season, so a
positive attitude is imgortant.
Try not to succumb to the
social %ressures of eating and
remember that you must con
tinue to take responsibility and
make wise eating decisions
even during the holiday season.
