Textile Industry
Shows Improvement
The textile industry in 1986
showed some improvement
over the past year, but a record
level of textile and apparel im
ports kept a lid on the in
dustry's economic recovery.
The industry's annual
economic report, Issued today
RI the American Textile
anufacturers Institute,
showed that 1986 textile
shipments, valued at
$54.7-billion, were up four per
cent over 1985. Textile imports
increased 17 percent over 1985.
Imports of textiles and afr
parel combined reached an all
time high of 12.7-billion square
yards in 1986 and the textile
and apparel trade deficit of
$21.5-billion was another
record. It was the sixth suc
cessive record year for textile
and apparel imports.
For the first time, Imf>orts
of apparel and apparel fabric
captured more than half of the
domestic market in 1986, as
market penetration reached 52
percent.
Textile industry employ
ment showed a one percent
%am. averaging 708,000 in
986 compared to 704,000 in
1985. At the same time,
average hourly wages increas
ed three percent to $6.93 per
hour.
Textile industry earnings
on sales were at 3.8 J)ercent
during 1986 com;lJare to 2.4
percent in 1985. Industry in
vestment in new plants and
equipment was down four per
cent for the year to $1.7-billion.
“Import growth has
averaged over 20 percent a
year during the past five
years,”” said ATMI President
Dewey L. Tro%don. “‘Because
the market is barely growing
and imports continue to climb,
the industry’s improved situa
tion could be very short-lived.
“We are absolutely convinc
ed that the industry’'s growth
prospects and even its survival
over the longer term are
threatened unless our govern
ment takes the necessary steps
to slow the growth of imports,’y
Trogdon said.
“It is clear that we must
have a legislative solution to
the problem and we will be
working with Congress on the
introduction of legislation ear
ly next year. This lelgislgtlon
will accomplish what President
Reagan promised but never
came close to achieving. It will
relate import growth to
domestic market growth.

“For 1986, industry capaci
ty utilization has averaged
around 90 percent,” he said.
“This is to be expected in light
of the plant closings and a nine
percent shrinkage of the in
dustry's capacity over the past
five years. If LKis amount of
caPacity had not been written
off, our operations would be
running at close to 80 percent
of ca&acity," he said.
“While industry profits as
reported by the government
are well ahead of a year ago,
1985 was a depressed period
for industry production and
sales,"" he said. **lndustry pro
fits almost always improve as
shipments increase, but we do
not know how much longer this
can be sustained with virtual
ly no market growth and con
tinued high import growth."
This year, the National
Safety Council reported that
the U.S. textile industry is
first in safety for all companies
participating in its safety

NSC listed the industry in se
