Why Not All Employees?
Dear Editor,
I read in last week's Summerville News
where the County Commissioner treated the
Ambulance Service to a Christmas dinner at the
Old Hickory Restaurant,
I think that was very considerate of him,
but I would also like to remind him that there
are other county employees who deserve the
same treatment who received nothing — not
even a thank you for his Christmas gi%t which
they made up and paid for out of their low in
come checks.
The commissioner told the county
employees that the county did not have the
money to buy them a ham for Christmas.
Yet he can come up with the money to treat
the Ambulance Service Employees. (Paid for
out of the malt beverage funds).
I'd like to ask the Commissioner how many
raises he has received since his reelection?
I know of two very nice raises you have
received, Mr. Powell. {low many raises have
More On Myers School
Dear Editor:
I notice from the last two editions of The
Summerville News that some questions have
arisen concerning the origin of the Myers
School which existed for some 50 plus years
northeast of Trion. Since I was quoted in the
Dec. 11 edition I would like to clarify and ex
pand slightly on my statement to Mrs. Abbott
of your stafpfl.
I received a call from Mrs. Abbott asking
if I knew when the Myers School opened. After
checking my information on schools in the coun
ty I advised her that the Myers School was
opened in February or March of 1896. I also ad
vised her that the Myers School was predated
by the Laurel Hill School which was located in
the general area where the Pleasant Grove
Church of Christ is now located, north of Trion,
and that I suspected the church and school
shared the same building at one time.
Records of the early schools in Chattooga
County are practically non-existent for some
reason. Consequently, very little can be
documented concerning the early schools. My
information on the origin of Myers School came

Fire Protection Plan In Effect

for Summerville utility
customers.
* The city plans to contact
the Georgia Forestry Commis
sion to see if the Chattooga
forestry unit desires a mutual
aid pact similar to that bet
ween Summerville and other
local fire departments.
NOT SOURCE
* The city will protect the
property of a subscriber or
covered utility customer from
a blaze at nearby property not
covered by the city's fire ser
vice plan — but will not at
tempt to extinguish the fire at
the source. :
* Security for covered pro
perty where a fire has been ex
tinguished will be sought from
the Chattooga County Sheriff’s
Department, if the owner
hasn't been found by the time
the fire department gets ready
to leave.
* [f there is doubt about
whether a particular piece of
property is covered or if a com
munication or computer pro
blem arises, the fire depart
ment will respond to an alarm.
* Individual firemen will
not be personally liable for
legal action from aggrieved
citizens by carrying out orders
of the Mayor and Council.
ASSISTANCE
* The fire department will
respond to re%lllests for
assistance from the Georgia
State Patrol and Chattooga
Sheriff's Office — such as
washing fuel off highways.
* Qutbuildings at resi
dences will be covered if a per
son subscribes or is on the ci

would have to be covered wit
a separate registration fee.
* Utility customers outside
the city will be billed for fire
protection even if they don't
desire the service.

a life is in danger, the fire
department will res;fiond to an
alarm anywhere in the county.

you given the County Work Camp Employees?
I would also like to ask the gommissioner
who he calls on to clean up the mess when late
night storms hit?! I grant you it most certain
ly is not the Ambulance Service.
Mr. Powell it costs a county employee just
as much as it does you when he goes and buys
his groceries.
ou are certainly getting the best end of the
deal as far as paying the county employees is
congerned. for they are over worked andy under
paid.
Even that ‘‘damn bunch of idiots" (that is
the way you refer to them, isn't it, Mr. Powell?)
down at City Hall pay their employees a lot bet
ter than you pay the county employees.
They ‘may be ‘“‘a bunch of idiots,” Mr.
Powell, but they know how to treat their
employees which is a lot more than can be said
for gou.

from the Feb. 19, 1896 edition of The Summer
ville News which said, ‘**The new school house
near Myers Mill is almost complete. Professor
Bennefield will move his schoo? from Pleasant
Grove to the Myers School next week."
This does not preclude there having been
another school in the ‘*Halls Valley" area call
ed Simmons Flat School; however, I have been
unable to find any documented evidence of this.
I did find that the Myers School was occasional
ly referred to as the Simmons Flat School in the
19305.
Based on what I have been able to learn
about the school, I stand by my statement that
the Myers School opened in the early part of
1896; however, I do not contend that there was
not another school in the general area earlier.
If there was, those students, like those at
Laurel Hill, probably moved to the Myers
School when it opened in 1896.
I hope this wis)l clarify the origin of Myers
School.

I think the news coverage of local happen

30 DAYS?
Councilman Ira Pollard

system. However, he didn’t

Mayor Cash said another
delay would make the plan in
effective because county
residents would then expect
the city to delay it once again

POLICE CHIEF ARLEN THOMAS (L) REVIEWS PLAN
With Summerville Fireman James Archer (Seated)
in February
Councilman Cavin sug
gested that a form be
developed for firemen to carry
with them to fires and if it was
determined that the property
was not covered, residents on
the site could then sign the
form and agree to pay a service
fee of some S4OO for a call.
INEFFECTIVE
However, Councilman Bush
and Mayor Cash said the pro
posal would make the subscrip

would simply wait for a fxi)re

said the owner or occupant of

Attempted
Burglary
An attempted burglary was
investigated last Saturday by
Summerville police. i
Officer Alan Bryant said
Angelic Evans, 508 State St.,
reported that she was awaken
ed by a noise and found her
front door open and a storm
window pried open. Nothing
was found to be missing,
reports said.
A 15-year-old youngster

can of orange cocktail, accor
ding to police. He was iden
tified as Johnny Alexander,

Charged with disorderly
conduct in connection with the
incident was his father, Billy
Alexander, 52, of the same ad
dress. Officers Alan Bryant,
Duane Jackson and Charles
Owens investigated.
came under question at Tues
day’s meeting.
“We don't want to do this,”
Councilman Cavin said at one
fioint, adding later, ‘“We feel
ike yye' ve been backed in a cor
ner.
City Manager McCalmon
said the first bills for utilities
and the fire service will go out
next Monday.
RADIO EQUIPMENT
After the informal meeting,
it was learned that the city
may purchase additional com
munication equipment for the
fire and police dgpartments.
The mayor and councilmen
said they had received no com
munication from Harry Powell,
Chattooga County commis
sioner, since the Council’s ac
tion in early December when it
voted to implement the fire
protection plan.
The action was sparked

mid-December that the count
owed around $825,000 in banK
loans. They also indicated that
the county also apparently had
at least two SIOO,OOO savings
certificates on file in mid-
December. The county ap
parently had a $300,000 sav
ings certificate that was to
have matured last June.
Summerville's City Council
has already instituted a
subscriber program for fire pro
tection services. It went into ef
fect at 12:01 a.m. today, Jan. 1.
AGENDA ITEK;IS
In other matters, the
Recreation Board next Tues
day is expected to discuss roof
and door repairs, work on the
infield for a proposed new prac
tice field, requests for use of
the scout hut and Fairway
Recreation Center, the 1986
football equipment inventory,
participation in the basketball
program and summer equip
ment needs.
after Powell said last summer
he wouldn't be able to provide

agencies with funds in 1987
due to an expected end of
federal Revenue Sharing.
60 PERCENT
The Council said last fall
that 60 percent of the fire
department’s calls were to pro
perty outside the city limits.
Since the annual operating cost
of the fire department is some
SIOO,OOO, the Council voted in
October to ask Powell for
$50,000 during 1987.
After that action, Powell
called city officials “idiots’ and
added that he wouldn't provide
the money.
The Council almost voted
on a specific plan in November
but delayed action until
December to give Powell time
to further consider the city's
request. However, while Powell
said he would try to “help” the
city with some money, city of
ficials said the commissioner
wouldn’t make a firm, written
commitment.
CLASS 10?
Insurance agents in Sum
merville said they feel un
protected property in the coun
ty will eng up with a class 10
rating, meaning that residents
won't be able to obtain any in
surance, or that it will be ex
tremely high. Summerville has
a Class 6 rating.
In what may be one of the
more ironic turns in the con
troversy, city officials revealed
Tuesday that the county's
works camp and garage and
health department will be bill
ed automatically for fire pro
tection coverage since they are
outside the city limits but are
on city utilities.
POWELL’'S HOME
Commissiner Powell’'s own
home is outside the city limits
and is not served by Summer
ville utilities. Therefore, unless
he subscribes for fire protec
tion, Summerville firemen ap
parently won't respond to a fire
alarm at his resitfience.
As of around noon Wednes
dal))', a total of 47 E)eople had
subscribed for the fire protec
tion service. Thirty had sifned
up by the time Tuesday’s
meeting got under way at 10
a.m. and another six had sign
ed up by the time the session
ended near 11:30 a.m.
