END OF AN ERA
Oldest Lyerly Firm Closes
from second front
1936 DODGE
“Dad bought a new 1936
Dodge pickup truck to deliver
radios,” Smith said. “He went
to Atlanta once or twice a week
to get a load of radios and bat
teries. The old truck is still run
ning}.\ Mfl niece is driving it in
Nashville."
A business owned by one
family for so many years can
groduce a lot of memorabilia.
mith recently discovered
some of his father's early prin
ting jobs, which he took home
to preserve. The old Coca-Cola
clock will go to a relative, as
will the mammoth roll-top desk
W.H. Sr. purchased secon
dhand over 80 years ago. The
old presses will Ke sold and will
continue to run in other
businesses.
Although the print shop
has changed little with the
years, the town of Lyerly has
changed dramatically.
NOT SAME
“It's not the same,” Smith
said. ‘‘There used to be
businesses on both sides of the
streets. We had a blacksmith
shop, a grist mill, a cotton gin
and a big furniture store. Most
of them left when the whole
block burned down in the
19205.”
The Smith Printing Com
pany has remained on friendly
terms with other printing
businesses in the county over
the years.
“I've always gotten along
real well with The Summerville
News,” Smith said. “They
have always been helpful.
Whenever I would run short of
anything, I could always bor
row it from them. Of course,
there’s not many times they
would run out of anything.”
Although Smith will clearly
miss the old print shop, he is
looking forward to his retire
ment years.
“I'm going to sell out as
quickly as I can,” he said.
“Then I'm just going to rest
and fish. After 72 years, the
Smith family would like to ex
press thanks to all who have
made our business a success.”
