100 Ask
For Fire
Service
About 100 people had sign
ed up for fire protection ser
vices from the C‘i)ty of Summer
ville by around noon Tuesday,
according to Grady McCalmon,
city manager,
The city instituted the
system at t,f"n,e first of the year
after Harry Powell, county
commissioner, did not make a
firm commitment to supply the
city with $50,000 requested for
gollfntywide fire protection last
all.
The city had estimated that
60 percent of its calls come
from residents outside the city
limits. And it said cost of
operating the department is
SIOO,OOO annually.
NO MONEY
Powell had said in the sum
mer, 1986, that no money
would be paid to the city for
fire protection, recreation and
other services in 1987 because
of the anticipated end of
federal Revenue Sharing last
year, as well as the county's
indebtedness.
Prior to the Summerville Ci
ty Council's action last
December instituting the
subscription fire service,
Powell was quoted as sayinihe
would try to help the city but
officials said he wouldn't make
a firm commitment for a
specific amount.
He also called city officials
“idiots"" after they requested
the $50,000 last fall.
RATES
The city has rates for pro
viding fire protection services
to county residents and
businesses ranging from $5 per
month up to S3O per month,
payable in six-month in
stallments, plus registration
fees. County residents outside
the city but on Summerville's
utility systems are covered
automatically and are being
billed $4 extra per month, star
ting this week. However,
Menlo and Lyerly residents on
Summerville util)i’ties won't be
covered by Summerville fire
services unless they subscribe
separately for the service.
Local insurance agents
have said insurance rates will
likely skyrocket in the near
future for residents not covered
by fire protection services, or
insurance will be unavailable at
any price.
NEWSPAPER
Owners
Settle
Lawsuit
In a move that ends the
possibility of a court-ordered
sale pf the Rome News-Tribune
anq its sister publications, the
majority stockholders have
bought all the stock of the
minority owners.
The publications are now
wholly owned by the B.H.
Mooney family, Rome. Prior to
the settlement at year's end,
the Mooneys owned 69.5 per
cent of the company. The re
maining 30.5 percent was own

ly shopper printed at Rome;
the twice-weekly Calhoun
Times, the weekly Rockmart
Journal, the Rockmart Journal
Shopl[:er, West Polk Press,

Gordon-North Bartow Press,
another shopper.
The minority stockholders
had sued the majority owners
around a year ago, asking for
sl-million in damages and that
the company be sold. The ma
jority owners then countersued
the minoritdy for sl-million —
all in Floyd County Superior
Court.
The minority stockholders
said the majority had
mismanaged the company.
They claimed the majority had
sponsored music concerts that
lost almost a quarter million
dollars and that the majority
had received undue compensa
tion from the corporation, in
cluding personal loans from
company assets. The counter
suit claimed that at least one
member of the minority
stockholders had received un
due compensation and that the
lawsuit was harmful to the ma
jority's financial interests.
FRIENDLY?
Mooney 111 said the settle
ment was not friendly but Mrs.
Julian Harrison said it was
amicable.
Mrs. Harrison was
