Southern Railway Co. personnel early this
week installed new crossing signals at the
North Commerce Street crossing in Sum
merville as part of the U. S. Highway 27
widening project. The new signals have
been erected on the south and north sides

diovascular disease and receive
contributions for research,
education and community pro
grams in the fight against the
nation’'s number one killer.
Heart attack, stroke and
other disease of the heart and
blood vessels kill almost as
many people in the United
States each year as all other
causes of death combined.

round to provide the public
with information about the risk
factors of heart disease and the
warning signals of heart at
tack. The three major risk fac
tors for cardiovascular disease
are uncontrolled high blood
pressure, cigarette smoking

New Railroad Signals Installed

The 1987 campaign goal of
the Georgia Affiliate of the
American Heart Association is
$3,161,000. Dr. Randall Minor,
president emeritus of Shorter
College, Rome, is State Heart
Fund chairman. J. Neal
Purcell, managing partner of
Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and
Co., certified public accoun
tants in Atlanta, is State Heart
Fund vice chairman.
Volunteers will be active in
these campaign divisions: com
merce, industry and finance;
general business; special gifts;
residential; clubs and organiza
tions; professional; govern
ment; education; and special
events. Among the special
events will be Rock'n'Roll-a-
Thon for Heart sponsored by
the Georgia Health Care
Association and its member
nursing homes; Dance for
Heart, an aerobic dance event
sponsored by the International
Dance Exercise Association
(IDEA); and Jump Rope for
Heart, sponsored fiy Georgia
Association for Health,
Physical Education, Recrea
tion and Dance (GAHPERD),
with participation by boys and
girls in schools throughout the
state.

Of the 107 who earned voca
tional certificates, 29 continued
their education; 62 were work
ing with 38 of those in occupa
tions related to their training
and 24 in unrelated occupa
tions; seven entered the
military, eight were
unemployed and one couldn’t
be found.
The 1985 graduating class
totaled 169 students. Of that
number, 58 went to college, 33
were unemployed, 60 went to
work, nine went in the military,
six went to vocational school
and three couldn’t be found.
The survey noted that the
1985 survey was done in Oc
tober when the unemployment
rate was above 10 percent
while the 1986 survey was done
in December when the jobless
figure stood at 7.2 percent.

“The death rate from heart
disease has dropped 32.5 per
cent since 1972, Dr. Minor
said. “We must continue to
support the many activities of
the Heart Association that
have contributed to this
dramatic decline.”
During the 1986-87 fiscal
year, the Georgia Affiliate of
the American Heart Associa
tion will support heart research
totaling more than $950,000.

Six Face
DUI Cases
Six people were arrested
during the past week on
charges of driving under the in
fluence of intoxicants or
related charges, according to
the Chattooga County Jail
docket.
They include:
Harry Joe Persche, 49, Per
ryton, Texas; Charles Franklin
Dawson, 44, Oak Street, Sum
merville; Robert Bryan
Hunter, - 21, 710 W
Washin%ton Ave., Summer
ville, who was also charged
with disregarding a red light,
driving without insurance and
driving on a suspended license;
Jerry Lee Davis, 21, Summer
ville Rte. 3, who was charged
with refusing a DUI test and
with driving on a suspended
license; Richard L. Dover, 30,
Centre, Ala., who was also
charged with driving on a
suspended license, with being
a habitual violator, driving
without insurance, with being
a convicted felon in possession
of a firearm, and on a bench
warrant charging abandon
ment; Mark DeWayne Fowler,
20, McGinnis Circle, Summer
ville, was picked up on two
DUI bench warrants, along
with six more bench warrants
charging traffic violations, as
well as another unrelated
warrant.
Possible Arson
A possible case of
suspected arson is being in
vestigated by the Chattooga
County Sheriff’'s Office.
Inv. Ron Turner said the
mobile home of Hattie
Bateman, Lyerly Rte. 1, was
destroyed by fire last Sunday
while Ms. Bateman was in
Atlanta.
The mobile home was
valued at SIO,OOO and her
belongings were valued at
$5,000.
The fire is being in
vestigated, Turner indicated.
