Utility
Project
Delayed
Installation of utilities to
serve the proposed Chattooga
County State Prison at Penn
ville is running behind
schedule, partly because of re
cent inclement weather.
Grady McCalmon, Sum
merville city manager, said
Chastain Construction Co.,
which holds the contract for
the utility work, is far behind
schedule. The work was to have
been completed by last Dec. 10.
Utility lines f‘l'ave been in
stalled almost to U.S.
Highway 27.
McCalmon said no pro
blems have arisen due to the
delays, adding that the
Georgia Department of Correc
tions is satisfied that the work
will be completed in plenty of
time to serve the prison.
Chastain Construction Co.
had submitted a low bid of
$206,113.20 for the work. Bids
on the second phase of the
prison utility work will be
opened in late February (see
related story).
U. 8, 27
Meanwhile, McCalmon said
no more than the ‘‘usual’’ pro
blems have arisen in the reloca
tion of water, sewer and gas
lines along U. S. Highway 27
between Trion and
Summerville.
Because of the closeness of
the work to the existing
highway and the necessity to
try and maintain service to ex
isting customers while the
relocation work is going on, the
city manager said, some pro
blems have arisen during the
work.
The condition of the con
struction work during bad
weather has created some com
plaints from area residents, he
said, but added that it was all
on rights-of-way owned by the
Georgia Department of
Transportation.
Cary:. Harbuck Inc;
Americus, is the contractor on
the relocation project.
