REQUEST
Summerville's City Council
voted last December to adopt
a subscription fire protection
service program for non-city
residents. The action came
after Commissioner Powell
didn’t agree to supply the city
with $50,000 — or half the ci
ty fire department’s operations
Lyerly To Charge Fee?
Lyerly does not now charge
a fire J)rotection fee but may be
forced to do so if the financial
burden of maintaining a fire
department continues to
increase.
“We have no fee at pre
sent,” Mayor Danny Wyatt
said. “'lf the fire department
gets to be such a burden, we
may have to put out a fee
system.”
Wyatt said that the city
does charge a $125 fee for
answering fire calls outside the
city.
X'This fee is covered by fire
insurance policies,”” Wyatt
said. “'lf the individual does
not have fire insurance, we
don't push it. We don’t want
the individual to have to pay
the fee.”

budget. The action followed
several months of controversy
between the commissioner and
the city over the issue.
At this month's meeting of
the Council, a letter from the ci
ty's Recreation Board recom
mended adoption of a fee
system for non-city residents
for the use of recreation
facilities, effective April 1, if no
county funds are forthcoming
before that date.
The City Council voted last
week to purchase a new tanker
truck for $25,000. The tanker
was to be used outside the ci
ty limits. Wyatt is also in
vestigating the possibility of
Eurchasing a low-cost ‘‘fire
nocker’’ tanker from the
Georgia Forestry Commission.
Repair of the city’s existing
fire tanker has been tabled un
til more is known about the
timetable for acquiring the new
tanker.
“We're going to see what
kind of waiting list there is for
the ‘fire knocker,’” Wyatt
said. “'lf it will be a very long
time before we get the new
truck, we will go ahead and
repair the old one. We want to
do everything we can to save
the department money."
