February is a good time for
pruning most fruit trees. It's
the beginning period for dor
mant peach pruning. Research
has shown that peaches should
not be pruned in October
through January. Peaches and
plums are generally pruned to
an open center or vase shape.
Total tree height is reduced
and fruit can generally be
harvested without a ladder.
Apples can be pruned
anytime after they've lost their
leaves. Trees are best pruned to
a central leader or modified
central leader shape. This
should result in a pyramid

radiating from the central main
stem. Pears are also trained to
a central ladder; pruning young
trees to select strong, well plac

important.
Experience indicates that
Frunins muscadine grapes is

resumption of growth in the
spring, so you'll want to delay
pruning this popular fruit un

productive by cutting back last
year's fruiting shoots to two to
three buds per spur. Except for
over-grown plants, the need to

removal of damaged limbs.
