Trion Man Fights
from second front
said, 'l'm not a whole man anymore,” " Mrs. Shelton recalled.
Doctors at Floyd didn’t believe the arm could be reattached
successfully, according to Shelton.
NO REGRETS
“They didn't think it could be saved,"" he said. **But they
said I could fly to Piedmont if [ wanted to see what they could
do. I thought it was better to go ahead and try and not live
with any regrets than to just let them sew me up. They called
in a helicopter to fly me to Atlanta.
“There was only a chance the operation would work.
Everything was torn way back into my shoulder and it would
be hard to match up all the arteries, blood vessels and nerves.
The doctors didn’t think there was much chance but they said
it was worth trying,” he said.
Following the 11-hour operation, Shelton spent 11 days in
the hospital.
“1 LOVE YOU”
“Immediately after he came from the recovery room, the
first thing he said was, ‘I love you Dorrie, I've got my arm,” "
Mrs. Shelton said. ‘*He wasn’t even awake yet."
“They used little metal strips and screws to hold the bones
together,” he said. **All the bones in my arm were broken.
They had to do some skin grafts after the operation. They put
a cast on my arm, but I only had to wear it about a week."
In February, 1986, Shelton began therapy sessions to
recover use of the arm.
SOME MOVEMENT
*I can move my shoulder and elbow now," he said. "' have
a real good slight motion in my wrist. Between therapy and
determination and a lot of encouragement from my wife, I'm
making progress. It seems real slow to me because I'm used
to gftting things done fast. But it seems a little faster than
it should be to my doctors.”
According to the young father, he has not decided if the
ordeal has been worth partial use of his arm.
“The arm never stops hurting,”” he said. *'l have to learn
to live with that. I don't really have any feeling in the arm
except pain. If you touch it, it makes a tingling sensation, but
I can’t feel textures or anything.”
LEFT-HANDED
“You don't get excited about an arm, you get excited about
the possibilities of what you can do with it in the future. To
me it'sTiUSL a tool. I was always well-coordinated with both
arms. There are a lot of things [ did left-handed that I can't
do right-handed. I shoot a gun right-handed but I used a lot
of tools with my left hand.”
Shelton says the injury has drastically changed his
lifestyle. "'lt's hard to adjust after being used to making good
money at Riegel and extra money doing odd jobs,” Shelton
said. "'There's no way I can go out an(sg make a living with
my arm the way it is. I can't settle for a little low pay job,
I have to make enough to raise my three kids. I can't com
firomise. Regardless of the things [ won't be able to do, I still
ave to make a living. The responsibility for bills is still mine.
Now it's just a matter of getting the training to make a living.”
BRIEF RETURN
Shelton returned to work briefly at Riegel after his
accident.
“I felt like it was just a courtesy job,' he said. ‘‘There
wasn't much for me to do and it was a small salary. I felt that
if I accepted that, I would be there the rest of my life. I want
to be rehabilitated. I'm going to take classes at Walker County
Technical School to start a new occupation that will support
my family."”
They g,ave three children, Keri, 11; Sjohn, 9; and Keisha, 8.
