A Flat Rock, Ala. woman
who died at Chattooga County
Hospital Jan. 25 after a traffic
accigent a few minutes earlier
died of massive internal in
juries, an autopsy has revealed.

tooga coroner, said medical ex
aminers told him that Gertie S.
Releford, 37, suffered massive
internal injuries in the accident
on Rome Boulevard in front of
The News office.
Sgt. Eddie Ivey of the
Georgia State Patrol had said
Mrs. Releford and her husband
were both conscious at the
scene of the accident but that
she died while being X-rayed at
Chattooga Hospita%. An autop
sy was ordered to determine
the exact cause of death.
Mrs. Releford's husband,
William Hugh, 45, also of Flat
Rock, was admitted to the
hos(Fital but dismissed a couple
of days later.
A 1966 model car driven by
Mr. Releford apparently went
out of control on rain-slickened
U. S. Highway 27 and struck a
guardrail at the Chattooga
River bridge, Sgt. Ivey said.
The vehicle then flipped over
on its top.
Mrs. Releford was pinned in
the vehicle briefly,

Harold Lindsey, 22, Fort
Payne Rte. 6, was charged with
driving under the influence of
intoxicants (DUI), speeding, l
reckless driving, failure to stop ]
at a stop sign, attempting to |
elude officers, aggravated |
assault with a motor vehicle |
and being a habitual violator. |
He is also wanted on burglary |
charges in Calhoun. “

the car didn't stop and he |
radioed for assistance from the |

Officer Gene Nix responded |
and joined the chase on South |
Commerce Street at Penn |

Anderson said the fleeing |
vehicle passed three cars on a
Highway 48 curve near

The deputy passed the vehi
cle near Fish Hatchery Road
and set up a roadblock east of
Smith Lumber Co. on Highway
48. However, the compact car
raced around the roadblock
with officer Nix in hot pursuit.
Anderson said he had original- |
ly intended to try to shoot out
tie tires on the vehicle but was
fearful of hitting the Summer
ville patrol car.
Nix said he tried to pass the
vehicle to get in front and try
to slow down the fleeing car. |
But, he said, driver of the Rab- |
bit attempted to run him off |
the roadway by ramming the
patrol car at least three times.
Still, the officer said he was |
able to get his patrol car in |
front of the fleeing vehicle and |
succeeded in almost stopping |

Fire Burns

Local House
A house on Clyde Street in
Summerville was destroyed in
a fire Monday night, according
to the Summerville Fire
Department.
The residence was owned
by Buck Morgan, Menlo,
reports said. Firemen were on
duty from 9:36 to 10:06 p.m.
A possible case of arson
was investigated as the result
of a fire behind Hurley's Food
Center, South Commerce
Street, at 10:39 p.m. Sunday. |
Firemen, who were on duty un- |
til 11:14 p.m., said bales of
cardboard were set afire. Police
said they were told that a dark
colored pickup truck was seen
leaving the area shortly before
the blaze was spotted. The in- |
cident was investigated by of- |
ficer Gene Nix and Lt. Houston
London.
A car fire was out on arrival
of firemen on Union Street
Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle
was owned by Lewis White, |
602 Union St., said firemen.
They were on duty from 1:50 to
1:59 p.m. ‘
A grass and cardboard fire

from 7:45 to 8 p.m. 1

fire was answered to the
residence of A.B. Baldwin,
Summerville Rte. 1, at 12:09
p.m. Saturday. Firemen were
on duty until 12:53 p.m.

community, was engulfed in |
flames last Friday. Inside the |
home was a total loss, he said. |

Anderson had rejoined the
chase behind Nix and the flee
ing car, the deputy said, and
witnessed the collisions. Both
cars were locked together at
one point, Anderson said, and
went across the hilltop just
east of Menlo side-by-side.
The car made a sharp left
turn off Highway 48 onto
Highway 337gwhifz Nix went
straight ahead attempting to
slow the patrol car, said Ander
son. Botfi vehicles then raced
after the fleeing vehicle on
Highway 337 south through
Alpine and across the Alabama
state line,
At that point, they radioed
for assistance from Alabama
law enforcement authorities.

the chase about two miles west
of Gaylesville, Anderson said.
WKen the convoy reached
the four-way stop in
Gaylesville, the Rabbit made a
sharp left turn across a park
ing lot and went down an em
bankment, Anderson said. Nix
said the car stalled trying to
get up the hill and the driver
jumped out and raced into
some nearby woods.
HIDES IN GIN
After a 45-minute search by
Anderson, Nix and Alabama
authorities, Lindsey was found
hiding in the cotton gin at
Gaylesville, the deputy said.
He waived extradition and was
returned to Chattooga County
to face multiple charges
resulting from the chase, which
reached speeds of 80 to 90
mph, Anderson said.

$1.4-million
More than $1.4-million in
1986 property tax payments

given checks to Powell totaling
$1,418,180.88 for county
maintenance and operation

Taken In Theft
A stereo radio and two
speakers valued at $250 were
reported stolen from a 1966
Mustang Sunday night, said
Summerville police Sgt.
George Dean.
The vehicle was owned by
Brent Williams, 212 Scoggins
Ave., he said.
Officer Gary Ford respond
ed to an unusual case oman
