Forest Tax
Options
Proposed
Chattooga County Forest
landowners were reminded this
week by Fred Hall of the
Georgia Forestry Commission
that the beginning of the new
tax season is ‘‘an opportune
time to consider various tax op
tions before signing a contract
to: have their timber
harvested.”
It is recommended by Paul
Butts, Commission forest
utilization specialist, that
Georgia landowners consult a
certified public accountant or
some other qualified tax
specialist to investigate the
possibilities for decreasing tax
payments, Hall said.
. ‘Before signing any bin
ding contract to have your
timber harvested, it is wise to
consult a tax expert,” Butts
said. ““There have been occa
sions where landowners sold
their timber hastily and paid
considerable taxes that could
have been avoided."”
Hall said the Commission
recommends that forest lan
downers get several bids before
signing a contract with a
timber buyer, but emphasized
that obtaining professional tax
advice before selling can be
equally important.
Hall said landowners in
terested in information on
forest taxation may contact his
office.
