Former Menlo
Mayor Passes
Former Menlo Mayor Lon
nie H. Ward, 72, Polk Street,
Menlo, died last Thursday mor
ning Feb. 26 in a Rome
hospital.
Blr. Ward was born in Chat
tooga County on Dec. 6, 1914,
son of the late Joshua and Ella
Dempsey Ward. He was a
farmer, a member of Menlo
United Methodist Church, a
member of Alpine Lodge
F&AM, and a former
schoolbus driver.
Mr. Ward was mayor of
Menlo from 1964 throuih 1967
and from 1975 through 1977.
He also served on the Cit
Council from 1970 Lhroug%
1973 and from 1979 through
1984.
Funeral services were held
at 11 a.m. last Saturday at
Menlo United Methodist
Church with the Revs. Charles
Hendrix. John Reeves and
George Kittle officiating. Inter
ment was in Oak Hill
Cemetery.
Survivors include his
widow, Mrs. Jewell Jones
Ward; one daughter, Mrs.
Carol Simmons, Lake City,
Fla.; three sons, Houston
Ellenburg

Bassed away Feb. 25 in the
eterans Administration
Medical Center, Decatur.
He was a member of New
Bethel Baptist Church, a
veteran of World War 11,
employed by Modern Dry
Cleaners, and formerly a singer
with the Tri-City Harmonizers.
Survivors are three
daughters, Mrs. Bernice Blair,
Mrs. Danette Jet and Mrs.
Angela Underwood, Summer
ville; one son, Jackie Shrop
shire, Nashville, Tenn.; three
sisters, Mrs. Florene Coats,
Chattanooga, Mrs. Laura
Brooks and Mrs. Pearl
Watkins, Summerville; one
brother, Charlie Brooks, Col
umbus; 15 grandchildren;
nieces, nephews, cousins and
other relatives.
Funeral services were held
at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the New
Bethel Baptist Church, Sum
merville with the Rev. O. J.
Jordan and other ministers
officiating.

Thelma Loveless and Annie
Martin.
Honorary pallbearers were

Mrs. Estelle Williams Den
dy, 76, 109 Maple St., Summer
ville, passed away Monday at
5:45 a.m. at her residence.
She was born in Fulton
County Feb. 5, 1911, daughter
of the late George Williams and
Mattie McLucas Williams.
Mrs. Dendy was a retired tex
tile worker, a dorm mother at
Tauallah Falls School and a
member of the Berryton Bap
tist Church. Her husband,
Daniel B. Dendy, died earlier.
Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. Mary Baker, Summer
ville; one son, Gordon Dendy,
Hazel Park, Mich.; two sisters,
Mrs. Clara Jones and Miss
Bessie Williams, Atlanta; eight
grandchildren; nine great
grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the
chaperof Erwin-Petitt Funeral
Home with the Rev. Jimmy
Bailey officiating.
Interment was in Green
Hills Memory Garden.
Active pallbearers were

Evie Gaylor
Mrs. Evie E. Gaylor, 63,
Lyerly Rte. 2, passed away Fri
day morning from injuries
received in an auto accident in
Summerville.
Mrs. Gaylor was born in
Chattooga County Aug. 22,
1923, daughter of the late Joe
Roy and Evie Abernathy
Smith. She was a member oi
Perennial Springs Baptist
Church.
Surviving are her widower,
Ernest Gaylor; daughter, Glen
da Gaylor, Atlanta; three
sisters, Mrs. Duene Broome,
Washington, Ga., Mrs. Susie
Mae Ponder, Summerville and
Mrs. Ovell Abernathy, Hiram;
two brothers, Wesley Smith,
Armuchee and Ralph Smith,
Decatur; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Monday in the Hill
Chapel of Lane Funeral Home
with the Rev. Jerry Pope
officiating.
Interment was in Lyerly
Cemetery.

Reynolds
William L. ““Bill"" Reynolds,
79, Summerville Rte. 1, passed
away Saturday morning at his
residence.
Mr. Reynolds was born on
Dec. 22, 1907, son of the late
Charlie and Daisy Yancey
Reynolds. He was a retired tex
tile worker.
Surviving are his widow,
Mrs. Beulah Stewart Reynolds;
three daughters, Mrs. Betty
Howell and Mrs. Kathy
Dillard, Summerville and Mrs.
Joyce Brown, Lyerly; four
sons, Billy Reynolds, Robert
Reynolds, Don Reynolds and
F. L. “Bud” Reynolds, Sum
merville; 21 grandchildren; 15
great-grandc%fildren; several
nieces and nephews also
survive,
Funeral services were held
at 4 p.m. Monday in the Hill
Chapel of Lane Funeral Home
with the Revs. Bob Patterson,
Sanford Deßerry, J.R.
Hawthorne and J. A. Blount
officiating.
Interment was in Summer
ville Cemetery.

noon Saturday, March 21.
It is also open on weekdays.

Arrested for driving under
the influence of intoxicants
(DUI) during the past week

also charged with driving on a

Honored
Madelyn Lowry, who
retired from Farmers and Mer
chants Bank Feb. 27 was
recently honored with a retire
ment luncheon by the bank's
emg}loyees.
rs. Lowry first came to
Farmers and Merchants in
1953, then rejoined the bank in
1968. For two years, she work
ed in the b(x)k{(eeping depart
ment; she'then became a teller
and in 1972, when the Trion
Branch of Farmers and Mer
chants was opened, transferred
there as a Le‘l)ler. In 1983, she
returned to the Summerville of
fice in the bookkeeping
department.
Some of her community ac
tivities include being a member
of the Summerville First Bap
tist Church and a member of
the Business and Professional
Women's Club of Summerville.
Farmers and Merchants
Bank presented Mrs. Lowry
with a watch and a plaque in
honor of her years 0? service.
