ticipants in the agency’s 1986
acreage reduction program for
corn and grain sorihum will
soon be receiving their long
awaited 1986 crop deficiency
payments.
Nationwide, payments will
total an estimated

ducers receiving approximate

scores, good character,
demonstrated leadership abili
ty and responsible citizenship,
Dr. Shatto pointed out.

semi-finalists selected throu%h
the screeniniprocess recently
attended the Presidential
Scholars Selection Weekend on
Feb. 27 and 28 to be interview
ed by the committee and to
familiarize themselves with the
campus.

During the 1986 crop-year, na
tional weighted average
market prices for corn and
grain sorghum were $1.46 Eer
ushel and $1.33 ger bushel,
respectively. Eligible corn pro
ducers will be paid a deficien
cy payment rate of 63 cents per
bushel, based on the difference
between the $3.03 target price
and the $2.40 basic loan rate.
Grain sorghum producers will
likewise be pai(f a deficiency
ayment rate of 60 cents per
gushel based on the difference
between the $2.88 target price
and the $2.28 basic loan rate.
The deficiency payment rates
for both commodities are the
maximum permitted by law.
Eligible corn and sorghum
producers will receive another
1986-crop deficiency payment
in October, 1987 if tIIe national
average market prices received
by farmers during the entire
marketing year for both com:
modities are below the basic
loan rate.
Hammond said the
payments will be issued
through the Chattooga County
ASCS Office as soon as they
are received.
