ple when they need help.
*“The most precious way to
help a young Eerson is to be
there at the right time and give
two or three minutes to sit
down and listen to their pro
blems,” he said. “‘lt would save

and maybe an extra trip to the
cemetery. Kids are trying to
find a friend.

you, Momma and Daddy love
you, your teachers love you.’
When I mentioned love, that
boy just broke down and shed
tears. The more I got into my
program, the more he seemed
to cry. I wondered why is that
strapping young man crying.
It lggda I‘;othered me so I
couldn’t wait until the program
was over. I ran off the stage
real quick and put my arm
around him ancl) said, ‘Son,
what's wrong, did I say
something wrong.’
“He said, ‘You said the
sweetest words that's ever
been told me directly in my life
and I'm 15 years old. My dad
dy has never one time in my life
told me he loved me. Now I feel
like somebody special. I final
ly found a man who said I'm
somebody.’
LET KIDS TALK
“If parents would let kids
talk it out, it would solve 50
gercent of our ]problems,"
umner added. “‘I have kids
who come to me every day that
say nobody listens, nobody
cares; we just seem to be in the
way, we're in everybody’s hair.
“I lost my garents when 1
was 3 years old in an auto ac
cident. My only brother died on
Guada canal in World War 11.
I use it as a constructive point,
not for sympathy, when I tell
the kids that if I can make it,
look what they have to help
them get along in life. I try to
tell them to appreciate and
respect their parents, if they're
lucky enough to have them."”
Sumner wanted to help
young people even while grow
ing up in an orphanage in
Waltham, Mass.
“I always said, if I ever had
a chance to help young people
be somebody, I was going to do
it,” he commented. ‘I proved
to the world that on my own in
an orphanage home, I could
make myself an Eagle Scout.
I'm proud of that. Overseas in
the military, I built orphanage
homes for children lost from
their TParents.
“The other servicemen
would make cookies and ice
cream for the little kids. I have
always coached Little League
ball and midget football.”
COMBAT
The 56-year-old retired
Marine saw combat duty in
World War 11, Korea and Viet
nam in his 23-year military
career. Two crises helped shape
his current goals of helping
young people.
“T believe God saved me
from dying at Iwo Jima,”
Sumner said. I was one of only
six men of 111 Marines in my
comi)any to make it back alive.
I believe God saved me for a
purpose and that’s when I gave
m{r life to Him. I am a deeply
religious person. I have a
strong belief that we need to
get on God's side. I tell the kids
the way to get high is with the
Man in the sky."”
SECOND TIME
The second life changing ex
perience Sumner had was as an
Albany policeman on patrol in
1971.
“I had been a gatrol officer
for seven years,”’ he said. “‘One
night I got a 10-18 (come quick
ly) but I was too late. A youn
girl who took an overdose diefi
in my arms. [ went down to the
chapel of the hospital that
night 16 years ago, and I ask
ed God what I could do. All I
could hear in the back of my
mind was the word, ‘educa
tion." That's when it came all
together. I had to get these
kigs educated. I've been on the
road ever since.”’
