NLC Meet
Summerville Mayor Pro-
Tem Ira H. Pollard Jr. was in
Washington recently for a Na
tional League of Cities meeting
to evaluate and respond to
federal policy and budget
priorities that will affect cities
and towns throughout the
country this year.
Nearly 3,300 municipal
leaders gathered for the annual
Con%;-essional-City Conference
which focused on domestic
policy issues that were largely
crowded aside during the tax
reform debates of the past two
years.
NLC President Cathy
Reynolds, Denver,
councilmember-at-large, outlin
ed the League's priorities for
1987, inclugil;ig key programs
which she describetl) as ‘“‘not
just municipal programs, but
national programs that impact
residents of the nation’s cities
and towns.”
House Speaker Jim Wright
(D-Tex.), aggressed the con
ference’s opening session and
described some of the likely
areas of legislative activity in
Congress this year, inclu(l,ing
issues such as welfare reform,
transportation, housing and
trade.
