Wants Another Lawyer
To the Editor,
To whom it may concern:
I'am an inmate at the Chattooga County
Jail. My trial was Feb, 27, 1 hag a court
afipomted lawyer, who I think was working for
the state instead of me.
[ feel he helped the state convict me instead
of defending me. My court-appointed lawyer
wouldn’t even let me get on tge witness stand
to defend my own self. And he would not cross
examine any of the state's witnesses either.
I think my case was very defendable. At my
trial I had copies of two warrants. On my war
rant the agent claimed he supposedly busted
me in Summerville on Bankston Street Oct. 2,
1986, between 9:30 and 10 p.m., and on the
other person's warrant, the same agent claims
he busted them (the other person) in Lyerly Rte.
1, on Oct. 2, 1986 between 9:30 and 10 p.m. But,

Mental Retardation Issues
Dear Editor:
Mental retardation can happen in any fami
ly — rich or poor, black or wiite, with young
parents or olger parents. People who are men
tally retarded have a below average intelligence
andy inadequate skills for daily %ife. Mentally
retarded people are not dangerous, nor are they
totally helpless.
We have come a long way since the days
when all people with mental retardation were
warehoused in large state institutions. We have
seen that people who are mentally retarded —
even those who are severely or profoundly
retarded — are able to learn more than we once
thought possible. With some assistance, and
the rifiht op%ortunity. many can live on their
own, hold jobs and even volunteer their time
to community services. it
Despite this pro%ress, stigma still exists.
For example, people resists having group
homes esta%lished in their neighborhoods. They
fear the residents will be dangerous and proper

my lawyer would not even bring this up in
court, i : L ;
During the trial, every time the D. A. and
agent would say something that was wronfi. I
would tell my lawyer and he would say, ‘“That
doesn’t matter.” 1 feel that I have been
misrepresented and did not get a fair trial.
Presently I am trying to get another court
appointed lawyer; hopefully one who will do his
job, If they won't give me an agfeal I'm going
to try and get a court-appoint; lawyer to ap
peal to a higher court.
There is nothing I can do in here to help
myself. So I just wanted everyone to know
about my situation. I have only 30 days to file
for my apgeal.
Sincerely yours,

ty values will go down. Experience shows that
neither is true. According to a Princeton
University study, the estabfishment of a group
home does not cause property value to decline.
Employers may not consider hiring a mentally
retarded person because they dougt he can do
the job. In fact, mentally retarded employees
often value their jobs even more than people of
average intelligence because the opportunity to
work does not come easily. Their attendance
and turnover rates are often better than their
co-workers’! : <
When we look beyond the label of ‘‘mental
ly retarded”’ and see the person, we will unders
tand that his or her goals are the same as ours
— to learn, to live independently, to find a job
and to belong to a community. :

PRESIDENTIAL INTEREST
Nunn’s Mail Jumps, Says Regional Aide
Since Georgia Sen. Sam
Nunn has indicated interest in
running for president, the
volume of telephone calls and
mail to his Washington D. C.,
office has increased tremen
dously, a Nunn aide said
Monday.
Miss Keith Tolleson, who
has offices in Rome and
Gainesville, was guest speaker
at the Summerville-Trion
Rotary Club meeting at The
Tavern.
When she was one of the
senator’s two receptionists in
Washinfton. they averaged a
total of around 175 to 180
tel?hone calls per day, she
said. His Washinfiwn schedul
injlsecretary handled 75 to 100
calls a day and his Geo(xif-ia
scheduling secretary handled
around 50 to 60 calls daily.
About 8,000 letters poured in
to his office monthl;' at that
time, she indicated.
MORE MAIL
Since Nunn has indicated
some interest in the nation’s
top job, the volume of mail has
increased to around 10,000 let
ters a month, “not including
fiostcards." she told the
otarians. His receptionists
are receiving 200 to 290 calls a
day, his Washington secretfi
handles around 120 to 140 c
daily and his Georgia secretary
receives around 80 calls a day.
Miss Tolleson acts as
Senator Nunn's liaison in a
40-county North Georgia area,
she said.
His Washington office has
a staff of about 32 separated in
to administrative, press,
legislative and military func
tions, she said. That number
doesn’t include Armed Ser
vices Committee staffers
assigned to assist Senator
Nunn, Miss Tolleson added.
BUREAUCRACY
Senator Nunn’s Atlanta of
fice is composed mostly of
caseworkers who assist
Georgians in their dealings
with the federal bureaucracy,

Field offices are located in
Rome, Gainesville, Columbus,
Savannah and Senator Nunn's
hometown of Perry. Each of
the field offices is staffed by a
Vocational Office Training
(VOT) secretary because the
liaison person serving those of
fices is on the road most of the
time, she pointed out.
As for whether Senator
Nunn will seek the Dernocratic
nomination, Miss Tolleson said
she doesn't know any more
than the public about what the
senator will decide. Although
he announced during the recent
Georgia Jefferson-Jackson
Day event that he had decided
not to form an exploratory
committee, indicating that he
may be leaning away from the
race, Miss Tofieson also said,
“he left the door wide open.”
QUESTIONS
The senatorial aide parried
several controversial questions
relating to the giveaway of the
Panama Canal, the Iran-
Nicara%uan freedom fighter
issue, South Africa and the
federal budget deficit, saying
she would prefer to transcribe
the questions and have them
answered directly by the
senator.
She was the guest of
Rotarian Henry Watson.
Lt. Col. Terry Nesbitt of the
Georgia National Guard and
Sue Spivey, executive vice
gresident of the Chattooga
hamber of Commerce, also
were guests of Watson. Colonel
Nesbitt was in Summerville
making plans to set up a
recruitment office for local men
interested in joining a new Na
tional Guard unit being form
ed in Chattooga and fiartow
Counties (see related story).

at the Chattooga County

When my wife found it on the doorstep
later that day, she was thrilled. She sat all
day repeating, ‘“‘Leon, Leon, Leon,”
wondering who by that name might have
sent the gift. In fact, the mystery so in
trigued her that she didn’t notice I had
given her nothing for Valentine's Day.
