County Digs Ditch Across Road
Chattooga County work crews dug a ditch
across County Road 249 off North Shin
bone Valley Road last week, apparently
to facilitate the flow of water from recent
rains. Residents of the area, however, told
The News' Bridge and Road Patrol that
they were hoping for a culvert, rather
than a ditch since the roadway is used by
school buses, mail carriers and people who
reside along the roadway. One area resi

LYERLY COUNCIL ISSUE
City Audit Format
Problem To State
By KAY ABBOTT
Staff Writer
Revising the format of the
city audit and an error in the
economic profile of the com
munity were major topics
discussed during the monthly
meetinf of the Lyerly City
Council Tuesday evening.
The Council was informed
by Mayor Danny Wyatt of a
number of deficiencies state
auditors found in the format of
a city audit previously submit
ted gy the council.
FORMAT
Councilman Billy Stallings,
an accountant who prepared
the original financial statement
without charge to the city, said
that the problems were not
with the figures, but with the
format in which they were
presented.
In examining a sample
audit sent by the state as a
guideline, Stallings estimated
that compiling a similar docu
ment for Lyerly would cost
around $3,000 if done by a

Hayes and Bardwell emphasized that all

private CPA firm. According
to city Clerk Gwen Bentley, the
city only receives about $3,000
in state funding each year. The
Council took no action on the
matter.
POVERTY LEVEL
Mayor Wyatt noted that
the city of Lyerly is within the
poverty level based on per
capita income. An error in a
study made by city engineers
Williams, Sweitzer and Bar
num, Rome, showed the city to
be well above the poverty level.
“The poverty I:avel figure is
around $10,000,” Wyatt said.
“In the revised study, we came
a few hundred doll‘z’irs under
the poverty level.”
The change in the study will
mean that Lyerly is eligible for
lower interest loans and state
grants in funding its water
system renovation this year.
The renovation plan, which
includes drilling a well,
building a 150,000-§allon water
storage tank and enlarging
water lines in problem areas,
will cost some $450,000 accor
ding to recent estimates by the
engineering firm. Wyatt is
hopeful that most of the fun
ding can be secured through
grants.
The Council expressed its
gratitude for the receipt of
SSOO from Commissioner
Harry Powell for the city
volunteer fire department.
Powell presented the check to
the city last Friday.

The Council has not receiv

Wyatt reported.
