Topic Of Turf ‘Down To Earth’
It takes between 8,000 and
11,000 square feet of artificial
turf to cover a football field and
sidelines, members of the
Summerville-Trion Rotary
Club were told Monday.
Rotarian John B. Whis
nant, who previously owned
one of the only two plants in
the United States that
manufactured the turf, was the
speaker., Whisnant, now a
member of the Summerville-
Trion Club, displayed several
samples of the t,ur{ during his
address at The Tavern, Trion.
His plant was located at
Chatsworth and was known as
Playfield Industries. Monsan
to also produced Astro turf at
its Dalton plant.
PROCESS
Cost of the turf for the
average university or stadium
field was around SIBO,OOO, he
indicated. When artificial turf
is installed, the soil on a field
is scooped out to a depth of
three &et and refilletf with
crushed rock over four-inch
drain tiles. The rock is then
paved with four inches of
asphalt so that the field has an
18-inch crown from goalpost to
goalpost. The asphalt is then
sealed and a 5/8-inch pad in
stalled before the artificial turf
is glued down, Whisnant said.
Since five or six ¥ames a
week are sometimes played on
a fieid, it's impossible for
natural grass to take the
“beating’’ without turning in
to a dust bowl or quagmire
before the end of the season, he
indicated. In addition, most
television networks are deman
ding an artificial surface before
agreeing to cover college foot
ball games, Whisnant said.
FIELDS
His firm made 18 to 20 foot
ball fields per year plus
numerous soccer fields and
cricket field surfaces, Whis
nant said.
Whisnant described the
materials used to make the turf
and the precise measurements
required to ensure that
manufacturing com(fany
employees aren’t injured dur
ing the process.
Whisnant began his career
in the carpet industry with
Bigelow-Sanford Inc. in Sum
merville in the early 19505. He
worked in Virginia,
