anywhere near that,” said a
Census Bureau official late last
week when questioned about
the figures.
The Bureau then produced
a copy of its national report on
“Provisional Estimates of the
Population of Counties’ which
said Chattooga lost population
at a rate of 2.2 percent during
that six-year period of time.
The Atlanta District Office of
the Census Bureau reported
the same figure.
.. The national . document,
from which AP obtained its in
formation, is listed by states
and each county is listed in
alphabetical order. Just under
Cfiattooga County is Cherokee
County, which tl};e document
shows had a growth rate of
42.8 percent in those six years.
JUMPED LINE
The AP reporter evidently
jumped down a line from Chat
tooga when he wrote his story
and erroneously listed the
Cherokee growth rate as that
of Chattooga.
Chattooga's 1980 popula
tion is listed at 21,856 w%j.le the
1986 population estimate is
21,400. Cherokee's 1980
population was 51,699 and its
provisional 1986 estimated
population was 73,800, the
Census Bureau said.
So for the time being,
anyway, the ‘‘mystery’ of
Chattooga County's ‘‘missing
population” has been solved.

Car Interior
Destroyed By
Morning Fire
The interior of a LaFayette
woman’s car was destroyed by
fire early Wednesday morning
while it was lf)arked in front of
a Summerville restaurant.
Summerville police
reported that Sandra D.
Mullins, LaFayette, parked in
front of the Huddfie House
restaurant, Lyerly Highway at
Rome Boulevard, and went in
side to use the phone just
before the fire occurred. She
had left her vehicle running.
A patron in the restaurant
shouted that her car was afire
and when she and a friend tried
to retrieve some Fersonal items
from the vehicle, they were
driven back by intense flames,
said officer Ken Parker. Police
speculated that wiring in the
car’s dash short-circuited and
caused the fire.
The Summerville Fire
Department extinguished the
blaze.
Another car caught fire on
South Congress Street last
Sunday at 8:55 p.m., said
reports. Wires on the engine
were slightly damaged and the
blaze was out on arrival of fire
fighting equipment.
