FOR A VERY long time it has been
safe to attack two groups in American
society without fear of counter-attack.
First was the Christian Church and the se
cond was Big Business. They never fought
back. It looks like that may be changing.
At least for the Christians.
If you have been following the news,
perhaps you've read that parents of school
children in Tennessee and Alabama have
been sufficiently offended to participate in
lawsuits filed in Federal Courts over some
educational material which they con
sidered violations of their First Amend
ment rights and an egregious violation of
their religious convictions,
* * *
MAYBE NOT enough parents read the
textbooks their children study, therefore
they quietly accept what's provided by the
school boards. That is, unless the kids in
vite parental attention to the differences
in what's being taught at home and what'’s
taught at school. It would be helpful if all
parents read those textbooks. There’s a lot
going on and you might not like all of it.
Federal Judge Thomas Hull of Ten
nessee ruled last year that children of six
families could not be forced to study a
reading text which violated their religious
convictions. Federal Judge Brevard Hand
of Mobile last year also ruled that since the
U. S. Supreme Court had ordered religion
out of schools, fairness indicated the
religion of Secular Humanism should be
put out, too. Forty-four textbooks pro
moting that religion had to go.
* * *
LAST MONTH two federal appeals
courts overruled the two district courts.
Both sides seem primed for appeal to-the
Supreme Court. If the distortions and pro
paganda of the extreme left can be
separated out, it may prove to be an in
structional, fascinating contest.
Chief distorter and propagandist is the
radical People for the American Way
(PAW). They aren't. Founder Norman
Lear has been advancing a leftist agenda
for over a decade through his TV shows
“All in the Family,” ‘“‘Maude,” ‘‘Mary
Hartman, Mary Hartman.’’ He’s publicly
supported sexual perversion and
Nicaragua's communist government.
Catholic magazine Commonweal has cited
PAW’s ‘“weakness for slippery half-truths,
and stock slogans’’ and use of ‘‘deceptive
facts” in ads and literature. Monsignor
George G. Higgins resigned from PAW'’s
Board of Advisors because of PAW'’s “ex
tremist propaganda.”

CHAIRMAN of PAW is John
Buchanan, sometime Baptist preacher and

Congressman who was ousted from his
seat in 1980 for switching from Republican
conservative to the hard left.
“PAW is trying to dilute the impact of
biblical values on our culture by using
double-speak. Pluralism (to them) means
all beliefs — except Christianity — can be
presented in the public form,” says the
Rev. Peter Waldron of Baltimore's Chris
tian Faith Center. Last year PAW ex
pected to spend $8 million propagandizing
300 radio talk shows and thousands of
newspapers. They ran ads on more than
2,000 TV stations in 'B4.
* * *
PAW’'S ADVOCACY, via the media, is
that conservative Christians are trying to
censor schoolbooks. The opposite is the
case. Both court suits were over prior cen
sorship by the school boards, eliminating
all reference to Christianity and Judaism.
Of 600 stories in the Tennessee reading
text, not one presented Christianity as im
portant to any story. It was censored.
The texts pushed an extreme feminist
propaganda. They also contained 35
stories of children rebelling against
parents with no negative consequences.
Others promoted pacifism without an op
posite point of view.
* * *
ONE STORY stated Jesus could not
read or write, that King Solomon gained
all his wisdom by talking to animals. A
history text rewrote history to eliminate
Christ from the Mayflower Compact, and
stated the Pilgrims came to America
because they loved to take trips. Censored
was the fact they came here to escape
religious persecution. Not only Christians
but all Americans should be outraged over
this anti-religious censorship.
Critics, inspired by PAW, claim
parents objected to the Diary of Anne
Frank. Not so. It's not a situation where
ignoramuses threaten the public education
colossus with absurd objections to famous
literature, it is a reasonable objection to
Nazi-like propaganda methods where
school boards order children: ‘“abandon
your religious principles, or forget about
public education. We operate the schools,
not you. Like it or lump it.”
* * *
CRITICS SAY if any group can opt
out of any school work it dislikes, the
result will be chaos. Not so. Schools do it
all the time. Slow and fast learners are
split out now and foreigners learning
English, too. Religious differences are
already respected.
It’s the lions vs. the Christians again.
Only this time the lions are complaining,
the Christians are unfair, they’re resisting.

Letters To The Editor
Thanks To God
Dear Editor:
It started after Thanksgiving 1986. My first
thought was that I had eaten too mucf‘: rich
food during the holida;l" cause | had stomach
cram%s and pains bad. The pains persisted but
after hearing of stomach virus that was going
around, I thought that was my problem.
I was anointed and prayed for just like
James Chapter 5:14 and 15 tells us to do. Well,
I got temporary relief but not healed. I believe
God wanted me healed through cancer surgery
so that I could have a medical testimony.
The last week in April I saw the
gynecologist in Dalton who wanted me to have
tests made. They did an ultrasound and barium
enema test andy found a 9 cm. “‘apple-core le
sion” in my colon — most likely gue to colon
carinoma. After the doctor recommended that
I have a colon-biopsy test, it proved to be
cancer in my colon. El)‘he doctor a£rised surgery
that week and gave my family poloroid pictures
of the cancer he had taken through the scope
instrument.
The cancer looked like a bloody mass and
it was scary. Fear gripped me one day and I
knew it was time to pray. Remembering Mat
thew 5:6 which tells us to “‘enter into thy closet
when thy ;;lrai'est and thy Father which seeth
in secret shall reward thee openly.” I went to
my bathroom to pray. While stand};ng and pray
ing to God for help and deliverance from the
fear, I looked out t?ne window and saw a black
snake about 4 feet long. It was stretched out
right under the bathroom window with its head
up. I hurried and got my daughter, Lori, to
come and see the snake, then I got my husband
who raised the window and shot at the snake
three times. The last shot wounded him so he
crawled off faster than we could see where it
went. The Bible speaks of satan coming in a ser-
Rent, we felt this snake was sent by satan to
inder my prayer.
I deci({es to have surgery at Emory but God
had different plans. I needed to pick-up X-rays
at Dalton hospital to take them to Dr. Ammer

spite of the shots with all the medications, I
continued to have some hemorrhage.
On Sunday morning, May 31, the day of my
48th birthday, I had emergency surgry at the
Dalton hospital. After three hours the surgeon
came out and told my husband the cancer was
malignant but he got it all and that he checked
the liver, lungs. kidneys and they are clean, He
also remove lymf)h nodes all the way to the
Aorta to be sent off to be checked for malignan

surgeon told me they were all negative. He said
you are healthy and you will not need any treat

up, he said I was doing fine, just come gack for
a 6 month check-up. |
When I was in intensive care after surgery,
Jesus appeared on the TV screen. He didn't say
anything but I felt such a peace after that I
knew His visit was for my assurance that “‘He
never leaves us nor forsakes us'’ Hebrews 13:5.
I began to sing hgmns to myself and praise God
for what He had done for me.
My surgery was on Sunday morning when
churches were gathering for service. Many
churches, Christians, family and friends were
called. I want to thank you for your prayers.
God does answer prayer today. I appreciate my
