Bicentennial
Passes Area
Chattooga County did not
have a countywide bicentennial
celebration last week because
“‘none of the events directly ap
plied to the county,” Bicenten
nial Commission Chairman
Theresa Canada said last week.
The 10-member Bicenten
nial Commission was ap
pointed last October by Com
missioner Harry Powell to
head the county's observance
of the Constitution's 200th an
niversary. The committee has
held one meeting — in March
— which was attended by four
persons, according to a com
mittee member,
According to Mrs. Canada,
the commission may yet spon
sor activities to cef;brate the
Bicentennial later in the year.
MOST OVER
“Most of the counties in the
state had their major celebra
tions on Sept. 16 and 17, the
days of the national celebra
tion,” said a spokesperson
from the Georgia Commission
of ‘the Bicentennial of the
United States Constitution,
“That was really the focus of
the year's planning. For in
stance, my home county had a
celebration at each of tKe high
school football games in tfie
county last Friday evening. We
also did special activities with
the local school children. It's
still possible to do something,
though. Some counties are
celebrating the Bicentennial
with fall festivals in October.”
“Overall, we were very
leased with the response from
Eeorgians. We were leading all
the other states with 159 active
Bicentennial Commissions in
the state.”
ONE OF 200
“We receive a plaque com
memorating our county as one
of 200 designated Bicentennial
Communities in the nation,”
Mrs. Canada said. “We also
received and distributed
packets of information and
materials about the national
celebration to the local school
systems. The Commission will
meet again to discuss any in
