Trion Bulldogs Capture Big
Region Win In Bowdon, 24-12
Super Effort Results In THS’s First Victory Over Red Devils
By JOHNNY BRIMER
On a cool, crisp night in
Bowdon, the Trion Bu%ldogs
gained their first ever win over
the Bowdon Red Devils 24-12,
Bowdon came in a very decep
tive 1-3 with 2 of those losses
coming to Carrollton and
Palmetto. Trion was coming off
a defeat at the hands of the
Bremen Blue Devils. Some
skeptics wondered how the
"Dogs would resl?ond following
that loss and the long trip to
Bowdon. The Trion faitflful
soon found out, as did Bowdon,
that the Bulldogs had come to
play.
Brandon Floyd returned
the opening kick-off 18 yards
to give Trion possession at
their own 30. On first down,
Michael Crabtree ripped off 22
yards for a first down. On the
next play, Tim Deßerry gain
ed 8. On second and 2 at the
Bowdon 40, QB Victor Clark
hit Scott Daniel for 15 yards
and another first down at the
25. After Crabtree was stopped
for no gain, Clark ran for con
secutive §ains of 6 and 8 yards.
On first down at the Red Devil
11, and inconclipletion brought
ug second and 10. Clark gain
ed 4 yards on second down and
4 more on third. On fourth and
2 at the Bowdon 3, Crabtree
got 2 yards and a first down at
the 1. After Clark gained
nothing on first down, he
managed to reach the end zone
to cap a beautiful 70 yard, 12
play drive which consumed
5:10 of the clock. After Shan
non Tucker's PAT, the 'Dogs
led 7-0. Bowdon started on
their own 31. Two running
plays produced 6 yards. On
third and 4, Bowdon scatback
Bill Montgomery was trapped
for an 11 yard loss by Bufidog
end Chris Keen. A Bowdon
unt of 29 yards put Trion in
gusines at their own 43. After
a first down Crabtree run of 3
yards, Clark hit Daniel aiain
for 5 yards, setting u(r third
and 2 just past midfield. Clark
picke(i up 4 yards and a first
down behind fine blocking from
Roach, Tucker, Tripp, Davis
and Billy Clark. This offensive
line opened holes all night long.
After 2 plays produced only 1
yard, the 'Dogs once again
came up with the big play.
Clark crrifted back and hit
Brandon Floyd on a beautiful
pass play of 35 yards to pick up
a first down at the Bowdon 9.
However, Bowdon stiffened
and on fourth down from the 8,
Shannon Tucker kicked a 26
yard field goal to stretch the
Bulldog lead to 10-0 with 1:19
left in the first quarter. The
kick culminated a 9 play, 57
yard drive. David Peek nailed
the kick-off to the 1 yard line

VIC CLARK (11) TURNS CORNER FOR 32 YARDS
Trion Beats Bowdon For First Time
and following the return,
Bowdon began at their own 7
yard line. After a 1 yard gain
on éirstddowgl. sei:ondb d%vi/’n
roduced a big play by the
pDog defense. gowdon QB
Casey Teal lost the ball and
Trion's Stefan Hoglund
recovered at the Devils’ 9 yard
line. After a 3 yard run by Tim
Deßerry, Victor Clark got the
final 6 yards, and, after
Tucker's PAT, the 'Dogs led
17-0 with 11:18 left until
halftime. Trion’s defense again
shut Bowdon down, led by Bill
Roach and Shannon Tucker in
the middle along with Stefan
Hoglund and Chris Keen. For
cinia punt, Trion set u&shop
at their own 42. Two DeWayne
Bynum runs produced 13
yards, setting up first and 10
at the Bowdgon 45, Bi%l play
time again as Clark followed
super line blocking to ramble
32 yards to the 13 yard line.
After Clark lost 1 yard, he
gained 10. Third down produc
ed no gain. On fourth and 1,
Clark gained 2 for a first down
at the%. Clark gained 1 on first
down, and then, on second
down, fullback DeWayne
Bynum scored from one yard
out. After Tucker’'s PAT, the 9
play, 58 yard drive had push
ed the score to Trion 24,
Bowdon 0 with 5:08 left until
halftime. Bowdon moved from
their own 43 to the Trion 49 on
4 running plays after receiving
a 5 yard penalty. This series
produced the Red Devils’ only
first down of the half. On se
cond down, Bowdon attempted
a halfback pass from Ward to
Montgomery was intercepted
by the ever present Victor
Clark, who returned it 25
yards. After 4 uneventful
plays, the half ended with the
score reading Trion 24,
Bowdon 0. A stunned and
silent home crowd of Red Devil
fans knew that their
dominance of several years
over Trion was coming to an
abrupt end barring a complete
turnaround. The halftime
totals showed that the
Bulldogs had amassed 9 first
downs, 133 yards rushing and
55 passing. The rock-solid
Trion defense, starting only 2
seniors, had allowed 1 first
down and a measly 15 yards
total offense. Most veteran
Bulldog fans agreed that the
well-prepared traps of Coach
Tommy Sosebee had just pro
duced one of the finest hafi'es
of football seen in recent years.
The second half begafi with
Bowdon at their 26 yard line.
The Red Devils began to
display the running attack
they are known for. Teal, Ellis,
Montgomery and others mov
ed the ball downfield a total of
36 yards in 9 plays before the
'Dog defense rose up to stop
Ellis on fourth down at the
Trion 38, led by Chris Keen,
Bill Roach and David Peek.
VIC CLARK SCORES TRION TOUCHDOWN
Score Puts Trion Ahead, 17-0 Friday Night
Taking over at their oen 37,
Trion met a fired up Devil
defensive unit which allowed
minus 1 yard on a rush and 2
incompletions. Clark's first
punt of the night sailed 27
yards, giving Bowdon posses
sion at their own 37. Two run
ning plays of 15 and 12 yards
roduced 2 first downs,
Eowdon had the ball at the
Bulldog 36. Bowdon again
tried tie halfback pass, but
this time the roles were revers
ed. Montgomery threw to
Ward, but the results were the
same as Victor Clark once
again intercepted to thwart the
Red Devils. Starting at their
own 4, Michael Crabtree ran 3
consecutive times for 2, 7 and
4 yards. A clip, however,
followed by a 2 yard loss, forc
ed a punt. Clark's punt was
good for 29 yards. Bowdon,
beginning at the 'Dogs 38,
decided to throw since their
running game was not having
much success. Senior SB Teal
hit Ward for 14 and Mon
tgomery for 9 yards. From the
Trion 15 on second down, Ellis
gained 3 yards and a first down
at the 12. Teal hit Gil Ward for
a touchdown pass of 12 yards
to culminate a 4 play, 38 yard
drive. After Bill R'lontgomery
was stopped on a 2 point run
attempt, Bowdon had cut
Trion’s lead to 24-6 with 1:57
left in the third quarter.
Bowdon attempted, unsuc
cessfully, an onside kick. Star
ting at the Bowdon 49, De-
Wayne Bynum lost 1 yard. A
Clark pass was intercepted by
Bill Montgomery. The Red
Devils, beginning on their 32,
threw a 1 yard pass, and, after
a 7 yard run on second down,
the third quarter ended.
The fourth quarter began
with a bang. Bowdon's Junior
running back Tony Bonner
broke a long run of 45 yards.
He appeared to be going in for
the score, but Trion's Michael
Montgomery showed some
specd of his own to run him
down at the Trion 15. Chris
Ellis runs of 14 and 1 yard pro
duced Bowdon's second score
and capped a 5 play, 68 yard
drive. Following an unsuc
cessful PAT pass, Trion still
led 24-12 witfi 11:17 still re
maining. Another failed on side
kick gave Trion possession at
their own 49. Three plays pro
duced only 1 yard. (g’lark then
nailed a 48 yard dpunt. The kick
aEpeared to elude contact with
the Bowdon deep man, but, un
sure, a scramble ensued. Tim
Deßerry emerged with the ball
at the Bowdon 3. All indica
tions were that the contest was
decided, until, on first down,
Bowdon recovered a bad ex
change from center. It was here
that Bowdon showed some
spunk of their own. Moving
steadily downfield, Bowdon
traveled from their own 3 to
the Trion 9 in 10 rushes total
ing 93 yards. Bowdon received
2 penalties for a total of 10
yards, but kept the drive alive.
Startin% at the 9 yard line, QB
Teal rolled left, but Senior
linebacker Jeff Tripé) applied a
crushing tackle and a 1 ¥:ard
loss. On second down, Ellis
gained 5 yards, and, on third
own, he gained 2 more to set
up fourth and goal at the 3. It
was now or never for the Red
Devils. The Bulldogs decided
never was correct as a fourth
down pass fell harmlessly to
end the threat. Senior fullback
Crabtree took over at this
point. Running hard on 5 suc-
