Grant On
Agenda
For Board
A possible request for addi
tional funds from the Ap
palachian Regional Commis
sion (ARC) to continue the cur
rent stay-in-school program
will be among the items on the
agenda at next Monday's
meeting of the Chattooga
Board of Education.
The panel is scheduled to
meet at 8 p.m. in the central of
fice building on Bolling Road.
GRANT
The system received a
$25,000 matching grant from
the ARC last spring to fund an
anti-dropout program in the
schools. The county system
has the highest dropout rate in
Georgia. %he funds were used
to set up a Homework Hotline,
used primarily by elementary
and middle school students,
and a tutorial program at Chat
tooga County High School.
They were aF;o used to hire
Clarence Gilley as a stay-in
school coordinator, and for a
promotion campaign.
The school board is also ex
pected to discuss the system's
“‘cafeteria”’ benefits plan for
teachers.
COMPLAINTS
After numerous complaints
arose from teachers about the
»lan, mainly in the area of life
msurance, the board in late
November gave Vulcan Life In
surance Co. one more chance to
resolve the plan's problems.
The status of Vulcan's ef
forts may be discussed by
board members Monday.
The board is also expected
to open bids on removing
asbestos from several schools
during the upcoming
Christmas and New Year's
holidays.
Most of the asbestos is in
boiler rooms at all schools, ex
cept Summerville Middle
Scfiool. It has already been
sprayed with a substance
designed to keep asbestos in
ert, Supt. Don Hayes told the
board in early November.
Asbestos is also located in the
hallway ceiling of Chattooga
although it has been sprayed
and a suspended ceiling install
ed. The substance is also in the
Menlo School hall ceiling,
Hayes said, but it has been
sprayed and a suspended ceil
ing installed. Plans in early
November called for asbestos
to be removed from all schools,
except Menlo, during the
holidays. It would be removed
at a later date, Hayes said.
Renovations at Pennville
School are also on Monday's
board agenda, along with a
discussion of proposed new
policies, a bus route and recom
mendations for a teacher and a
janitor.
