Chattooga EM-CD Chief
Warns About Lightning
. Although no one died from
llghtnmf strikes in Chattooga
CopntK ast year, 68 were kfil
ed in the United States in 1986,
according to Robert D. Price,
director of the Chattooga
Emergen](.::y Management-Civil
Defense tEM-CD) organization.
Of the 68 persons killed last
year, 53 were males and 15
were females. ‘‘More men than
women are killed by lightning
— usually about four to one —
because men are normally out
doors more often for recrea
tional or work purposes,” Price
explained.
Regarding the 68 lightnin
fatplit?es reported ing 1986 g,
Price said, the National
Weather Service (NWS) pro
vided the following percentage
breakdown:
Statistics show that 28 per
cent were stuck while farming
or on open fields, 20 percent
were near, in or on open water
(swimming, boating, fishing),
and 19 percent were in or near
a building or home.
Also, 16 percent were
struckdown while near or
under trees; 15 percent were on
golf courses or ballfields; and
two percent of those killed
could not be identified as to
their location.
“Over the years, studies
have shown that about one
fourth of all lightning-related
fatalities have resulted from
persons seeking shelter under
trees,” Price exFlained. “Also,
a substantial number of
farmers are killed each year
while operating tractors in the
field. In urban areas, the
largest percentage of lightning
fatalities occurs on golf
courses.”’
Considered the deadliest
element in thunderstorms,
lightning is also the greatest
single cause of forest fires.
“Recently, such fires have
raged out of control in some of
our western states — especial
ly in southern Oregon, Califor
nia, western Nevada, and
Idaho,” he said. Hundreds of
fire fighters from the
Southeast — including more
than 50 from Georgia — travel
ed to those states to help bring
those fires under control.
“Everyone should learn the
basic safety rules and precau
tions about thunderstorms and
the ‘underrated killer' called
lightning,”” said Price. He cited
the following rules:
1. When planning outdoor
activities, do keep tuned to
your NOAA Weather Radio,
AM-FM radio or television sta
tions to be advised of the latest
weather forecasts.
2. Do keep looking for signs
of approaching thungerstorms.
DURING STORM
Thunderstorm charac
teristics include darkening
skies, towering anvil-shaped
thunderheads or clouds, in
creasing winds, rain, lightning
and thunder (Nature's warning
that a thunderstorm is in its
most violent stages), and occa
sionally hail ang tornadoes.
IF OUTSIDE
1. Take immediate action
when thunderstorms threaten.
Do try to set inside a home,
large building, or in an
automobile (not in a converti
ble). Do not touch any metal
parts while in an automobile.
The frame of an enclosed all
metal autombile offers protec
tion because lightning is con
ducted — esgeciall from an
overhead strike — tKrough the
frame and into the ground.
Because of vinyl or canvas
tops, protection is limited in a
convertible.
2. If stranded in a wooded
area, do seek shelter in a low
place under a thick growth of
small bushes or trees. Do not
go inside a shed — metal or
wood. Most sheds have dirt
floors, and the ground can
become a conductor of electrici
ty when lightning strikes
nearby.
3. Do not stand in open
spaces on a hilltop, near or
underneath ‘‘Natural” li%htn
ing rods such as tall, isolated
trees or tele(s)hone poles. Most
people killed by lightnirag are
taller than their surroundings.
4. Stay away from metal
pipes, phone lines, wire
clotheslines, railroad tracks,
and metal fences. These can
become dangerous lightning
conductors.
5. Do not stay at beaches,
lakes or pools. Do seek protec
tion in low areas — lower than
ground level — such as ravines,
gullies or ditches. If in a group,
do spread out and remain
several yards apart.
6.1f0n a f()l course, do put
down golf clubs and take off
your golf shoes. In fact, do not
use any sForting equipment
such as golf carts, bicycles, um
brellas, etc. These items can
act as lightning rods.
NOTE: 1f you become trap
ped on a level, open field and
you suddenly feel your hair
stand on end, lightning may be
about to strike you. Drop im
mediately to dyour knees and
bend forwar lE)uttin% your
hands on your knees. In this
position, if lightning strikes
near you, the chances of it us
ing your body as a conductor
are minimized. Do not lie flat
on the ground — wet ground
conducts electricity.
IF INSIDE
1. Do not stand in front of
a fireglace. open door or win
dow. tag away from heating
ducts, radiators and plumbing.
2. Do not use electrical ap
pliances. Unplug television
sets and computers. An “‘elec
trical surge’ from lightning
could burn out this equipment.
3. Do not use the telephone
except for emergencies.
