Lawrence Samuel Alex
ander, 56, Burnett Ferry Rd.,
Rome, died Tuesday in a Rome
hospital following an illness of
one fiear.
r. Alexander was born on
Oct. '27, 1931, in Chattoo%a
County, son of the late A. S.
Alexander. He was a member
of Boynton Baptist Church. He
owned and operated Alexander
Tours for three years. A
daughter, Judy Ruth Alex
ander, died in 1960.
Survivors include his
widow, Mrs. Ruth Stone Alex
ander; two sons, Sammy Alex
ander, Cartersville and Pat
Alexander, Rome; two
daughters, Jayne Simms and
Mrs. Freida Bates, Rome;
mother, Mrs. Lula Alexander,
Summerville; two sisters, Mrs.
Mary Ann Nix, Trion, and Mrs.
Dot Igou, Rome; six
grandchifdren.
Funeral services will be at
10 a.m. today in the West Oak
Chapel of Jennings Funeral
Home with the Rev. Curtis
Hammond officiating.
Interment will be at 3 p.m.
in the Tennessee-Georgia
Memorial Garden, Fort
Oglethorpe.

Ruth Ford
Mrs. Ruth Kathleen Ford,
58, Trion Rte. 1, died Monday
afternoon following a sudden
illness.
Mrs. Ford was born in
Walker County on May 25,
1929, daughter of the late
Samuel Jehue and Helen Baker
Sweet. She was a member of
Welcome Hill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Donald D. Ford,
died on Nov. 20, 1985.
Surviving are one son,
Donald Samuel Ford, Trion;
two sisters, Mrs. Doris Dover,
Trion, and Mrs. Annie Mae
Broadrick, LaFayette; two
brothers, Charles Jy Sweet and
Robert Wayne Sweet, Trion;
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Wednesday in
Ridgeway Baptist Church with
the Rev. Darwin Blansit
officiating.
Interment was in Littlejohn
Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were
Tommy Stenson, Darryle
Stiles, O.J. Ford, Marvin
Johnson, Chris Petitt and
Ricky Bruce.
Honorary pallbearers were
friends of tf‘lle family.

Ludie Hatcher
Mrs. Ludie Bryson Hat
cher, 85, Trion Rte. 1, died Fri
day at 10:15 a.m. at her
residence.
She was born in Chattooga
County on April 14, 1902,
daughter of the late Jim
Bryson and Elizabeth Moon
Bryson. Mrs. Hatcher was a
retired textile worker and a
member of Pennville church of
Christ. Her husband, Carl Hat
cher; and a son, Earl Hatcher,
both died earlier.
Surviving are one sister,
Mrs. Mattie Jo Lancaster,
Trion; one brother, Cecil
Bryson, Chattanooga, Tenn.;
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at
1:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel
of Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home
with Minister Hugh Glaze
officiating.
Interment was in Wooten
Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were
Gene Jones, Jack Bryson, Mar
vin Bryson, Roland Bryson,
Hubert Dover and Frank
Knowles.

ville, died Dec. 8 at his
residence.
Mr. Henderson was born on
Feb. 1, 1923, in Cherokee Coun
ty, son of the late Nathan and
Etta Wilson Henderson.
Survivors include his
widow, Mrs. Sarah Mae Crab
tree Henderson; one sister,
Mrs. Gussie Stori, Chicago, Ill.;
two brothers, Elisha l?ender
son, Summerville, and Ben
Henderson, Bal‘liplay. Ala.;
several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were
held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec.
9, in Johnson Cemetery, Chat-

Henderson
Austin Flint Henderson, 76,
306 Ellen St., Summerville,
died at 11:34 p.m. Dec. 8, in
Redmond Park Hospital.
He was born in DeKalb
County, Ala. on April 25, 1911,
son of the late Billy G. Hender
son Sr. and Emma Lankford
Henderson. Mr. Henderson
was retired from Riegel Textile
Corp., after 27 years of service.
He was a member of the Riegel
Quarter Century Club and
member of the Pennville
Alliance Church.
A son, Leon Henderson,
died on Aug. 22, 1961; a grand
son, Randy Henderson; three
brothers, Basil Henderson,
Durward Henderson and Rice
Henderson; and one sister,
Jessie Mae Cochran, all died
earlier.
Surviving are his widow,
Mrs. Hazel Little Henderson;
son and daughter-in-law, Ken
neth Wayne and Charlotte
Henderson, Cartersville; two
brothers, Jeff Henderson, Sum
merville, B. G. Henderson Jr.,
Rossville; one sister, Mrs.
Gladys Hester, Fort Payne,
Ala.; three granddaughters,

She was a member of New
Bethel Baptist Church and the
widow of the late Gus Horton.
Survivors are one daughter,
Mrs. Mildred Wilson; one
sister, Mrs. Mary Covington,
Summerville; one brother,
James Benson, Chattanooga;
three grandchildren; one son-in
law, John A. Wilson; one sister
in-law, Mrs. James Benson; one
brother-in-law, James Cov
ington; a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and other
relatives.
Funeral services were held
last Saturday at 2 p.m. in the
New Bethel Baptist Church,
Summerville, with the Rev.
OO.J. Jordan and other
ministers officiating.
Missionaries were
flowerbearers and officers of
the church were pallbearers.
Interment was in Pennville
Cemetery.

Homer Simmons
Homer Lee Simmons, 85,
Arab, Ala., formerly of Chat
tooga County, died Saturday,
Dec. 5, in an Folkville, Ala.,
nursing home.
He was the son of the late

Columnist For The News At Rotary Meet

A public hearing on an ap
plication for a $400,000 Com
munity Development Block
Grant (CDBG) will be held at
10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4 at the
Chattooga County Courthouse,
Commissioner Harry Powell
said this week.
The application is apparent
ly aimed at securing Klnds to
Thomas R. Simmons and Nan
cy Boyles Simmons.
His first wife, Lorene
Crowe, died in March, 1958.
His second wife, Jean Sim
mons, died in October, 1985.
Survivors include two
brothers, Horace Simmons,
Trion, and H. E. Simmons,
Cloudland; several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held
in the chapel of the Gobers
Funeral Home on Dec. 7.
Interment was in Baptist
Church Cemetery near Arab.

posed $806,000 water expan
sion project. The county in late
()cto%er received approval of a
$406,000 loan from the
Farmers Home Administration
(FmHA) to help fund the
expansion.
The county failed to receive
a $406,000 C{)BG earlier this
year. An official with the Coosa
Valley Area Planning and
Development Commission said
one reason the county may not
have gotten the grant is that
the FmHA loan had not yei
been approved.
The proposed expansion
would serve about 120 new
households and about 420
more people. When completed,
Chattooga Water District 1
would serve 1,131 customers.
Plans call for installation of
54,000 feet of six-inch water
line with fire hydrants to be in
stalled every 2,000 feet.
